WRITEUP: Installing an aftermarket electric oil pressure gauge

Hey guys,

In anticipation of adding my Permacool oil filter relocator kit, I added an aftermarket (Autometer) electric oil pressure gauge into a Lo-tek double gauge pod. Here's what it looks like and here's the write up: http://www.4runners.org/articles/gaugeoil

THanks for the writeup, I may be doing this in the future. Look you have room to put a boost gauge there!

I have a question though. What useful information does knowing your oil pressure provide? Can it be used to detect problems?

When I decided to buy the Permacool kit from another member, I did some homework and read that some people had issues with leaking or in one case, a total failure of one of the lines. Of course, having no oil running through the engine is not a good thing and thus, monitoring the pressure would be a huge concern, esp after adding a relocator kit. Also according to gadget's gauge page, he says that the stock toyota warning light goes off at around 4psi. I too agree that its not much of a warning, esp if youre on the freeway.

The other thing to monitor is if your oil pressure drops upon acceleration. the ol pressure should rise as you accelerate. if it falls off rapidly, i imagine you should take a look at the oil pump.

Hey, hows your room renovation/addition coming along? Start yet?

heheh...a boost gauge means an SC! I dont think i'll ever add an SC because the thought of paying premium gas just makes me cringe.

I'm considering putting a vacuum pressure gauge or a fuel pressure gauge. i believe the vacuum pressure gauge will be the more useful of the two. still reading and deciding.

I like the looks of all your mods Bob. They seem like factory options conpared to my 5 minute hack jobs. I would go with the vacuum gauge myself. It would let you see if you had a leak prob. If your fuel preassure is to low, you would probably detect it with your "butt dyno". As always, good work.

Its ok you will get use to it...


IMO, the most important gauge is an EGT, by monitoring the Exhaust gas temp, you can determine if the engine is running too lean or rich. You will need to drill and tap a hole in your exhaust manifold and run the probe. But I have heard its pretty easy.

The EGT gauge is on the mod list for both of my vehicles.

Just about 2 hours ago I finished the install that instills me into the ranks of folks being stuck with paying for premium.

I looked at it as about $3/tank more than I'm paying now, or about $180/year. For the fun that now exists under my right foot, and the gleem in my eye as I pull up to a red light, those are pretty cheap thrills.
