Hi. I had a transmission flush from the local dealership recently and it looks like they overfilled. When I check the trans fluid level using the dipstick (hot) it is about an inch and a half higher than the hot mark.

I have been also having tranny heating problems on (long/ verysteep) grades. Could the two be related? Is damage possible from an overfill?

As I understand tranmission heating is a problem on many 2nd gen's, I am about to install a Hayden 678 transmission cooler.

Here is my question. What is the best way to drain off the excess fluid. Simply open the top transmission plug let the excess comes out?

If the dealer did it, they should be prepared to fix the problem. Take it back, and have them check out the fluid level. I bet they'll drain some off...It might be a good idea to get the cooler anyways, I think it's cheap insurance.

Was the engine running?

 

No, that reading was with the engine not running, but I had just turned it off after a five mile drive, so it was warmed up.

 

You're supposed to check the level with the engine running and after shifting through all the gears.

 

Good advice. I may well be mistaken about the levels in that case. Will report back with results.

 

If the engine is not running the dip stick will read that the level is too high.
