4th gen air filter

I got a replacement today but it's just the main thick filter. You know there is a second element inside? Does that need replacing too or does it just stay?

I believe you're just suppose to replace the main filter and not that secondary filter that's there.

My secondary filter looks like a netting that's perm on the top of the box.

You are only supposed to replace the main filter. The second is a carbon based filter supposedly for emissions control and nowhere is it listed when to replace. It theory it should not get dirty as the first blocks all the dirt out. ne of the reasons I'm reluctant to look at filter you need to oil for the 4th Gen (K&N and Amsoil)

Thus the reason why I don't bother w/ them I know that 1-2hp w/o do me much good anyway so I don't see the need to buy those items. I'm happy with my stock filter (nice and cheap btw).

thanks guys that's what I thought. I also see no reason to change from OEM.

btw, the K&N cone filter is such a poor design. It will suck in water too easily. Also good point about the oiled filter clogging the secondary filter Andries.

I've been using K&N for years, to include the AirCharger on my 95 Taco. I purchased a new 4r not to long ago and droped in a K&N air filter. After reading the posts about K&N I thought I would take a look at mine to see how it was doing. With less than 3,000 miles and 5-7 days offroading, the secondary filter was extremely dirty! The K&N filter let enough dust through to make the secondary filter do all the work. Just "patting" the secondary filter with my hand reminded me of beating an old dirty rug with a broom. It was diiiiirrrrrrrty! No more K&N for me!

Which leads me to a question for you...does anyone know how to change out the secondary filter (4.0L, V6)? The mechanics at my local dealer said they've never done it before and that they didn't know how (???). I did talk with Toyota didn't I? Maybe I dialed Toys-Are-Us...???

They should have a parts catalog computer with the filter diagramed w/ part #. If it is a semi-permanent mount, you might have to buy that whole plastic piece but anything is cheaper than guzzling dirt into your motor.

Good luck!

I have the V8 so the setup is very different to the V6, but I couldn't find anywhere in the maintenance guides how to replace the secondary filter.

Maybe just go searching at local breaker yards for a totalled V6 and get the whole assembly.

As I previously said, I'm not keen on oiled filters (K&N, Amsoil), especially with the secondary carbon filter. I have been offroad many times with lots of dust and never was my second filter dirty. I just use the plain ol' Toy filters.
