Well I took the time today to remove the MAF in an attempt to clean it. I'd read a 1999 4Runner write-up but apparently the 1997 MAF is not the same. It appears that there are 2 wires set deep inside and not one, which cannot be removed like the 1999 version.

Upon closer inspection, I can probably stick a long Q-Tip in to clean it or spray some STP throttle body cleaner in there.

I wish I could have done a write-up here, but I didn't expect what I saw. Here are the pics:

Has anyone with a 1997 4Runner done this before? Perhaps I just need a poke in the right direction...? The highlight of the day was the fact that I cleaned my throttle body.

Hey Al,

I'm in the same boat with my '98. Its an early 98, I think the later 98's may have the other style MAF. I didn't do anything with it when I cleaned the throttle body.

I removed it from the airbox bracket and unplugged it. Then I sprayed contact cleaner (non-residue type bought at Home Depot) directly down the "X" cavity and over the metal contacts that connect to the plug. I used 1/3 of a can and really soaked it. Then let it completely dry before re-assembly. That was it. I had 77K miles on mine before the cleaning.

That's what I was thinking too. Did you notice any improvement (in power or fuel economy) or was it more of just a routine cleaning thing?

I'm not sure if the MAF cleaning made a difference yet. I cleaned it one week after I did the silencer mod, then it started getting really cold here in SE Wisconsin. I was hoping to get a small improvement in MPG but I have not confirmed it yet. The truck is running great right now!

 

is it possible to get the housing off? maybe jay could shine a lil light on this subject...??thanks

 

Short of crackin' it open like a walnut, I don't think so.

 

Just use a dab of soap and water on the q-tip and clean the electrical part that hangs in the wind. I wish I could say I have done it myself. I have this same style MAF, but I dont have any problems and I use the stock air filter.
