I need to replace the rear main seal on my 1994 V6/AT 4Runner. I knew it was leaking and I am tired of it. Like most people, I can’t stand leaks. I was quoted $710.00 by local shop for the procedure, as we all know its 98% labor charges. I know it’s a big job and pretty much know what’s involved. I would just like to hear from some people that have done it themselves or knew someone that did, if there are any tips, or hints on the job. Or should I just bite the bullet and have the shop do it because it’s such a pain? I have access to a lift, air, tools and such, so that’s not really a problem. I have put in a clutch and rear main on a 5.0 Mustang, and it took me 8 hrs.

I wish I could help more but I did it with the engine in pieces...

For now I will bump it back to the top, because I think this was talked about just a week or two ago, so someone might know.

 

i think that doing the work on the mustang would qualify you for doing the seals. you have access to a lift and air tools, get a hayes manual or similar read up on it and get your hands dirty!

did you do a search? I could have sworn someone was just talking about doing this without pulling the engine. I'd just tell you to pull it, though.

 

I did a search and found a lot of talk about it leaking, but nobody that did it themselves. I am jsut looking for tips to look out for while doing it or other things to do while its apart.
