Spare tyre underneath a 1996 V6 4 Runner

Hi.

I have a 3rd gen 4 Runner with a spare type on the back. However, I'd like to put another one underneath the vehicle. There is space but no chain lift device neither is there a hole to slide a rod at the back to hook upto one (even if one had been fitted). Has anyone encountered the same problem? Any suggestions?

Yours has a tire on the tailgate? It must be a Hilux Surf because the USA 4Runners did not have that option.

I would guess that you could buy the parts to put the spare underneith from a junk yard..

Spare tyre

It is a Hilux Surf. In order to fit a tyre underneath I'd need to drill a hole in the back someplace to get a rod through. Would that weaken the frame at all. I don't think making a hole in the rear bumper will work.

The spare tire hole on the 3rd gens is on the plastic part. It doesn't go through any metal. I am pretty sure it will bolt right up and you just need to drill that one hole.

I saw the word "tyre" and immediately thought UK.....

I would assume the body is made for one but might require some mods to get it in there.
You will also have to get parts from a North American vehicle for the tire winch and jack crank.
