WRITEUP- Changing a fuel filter on a V6 4Runner

Someone had to do it, given all the recent talk about it. This was an easy one to do (and to write):

Despite the writeup, I didn't end up changing mine out b/c I got the wrong part from the parts dealership that i ordered from (problem solved by dealer---thank you)

Yeah, it works. I was a huge skeptic myself the first time, and though I prefer PB, I'll use the tabasco if i can't find my can of PB.

Hey Bob, do you have any plastic covering up the fuel filter? When I did mine, I had to remove a plastic shroud-faux skid plate-thing first.

OK. I just mentioned it in case someone e-mails you and says they can't find it. They may need to remove that plastic piece, but hopefully people will realize that. I think mine was on with 3 bolts maybe? I never put it back on b/c it had partially rotted out around one or two of the bolt holes.

Another suggestion for the writeup is the use of a bit of teflon tape on the threads of the fitting to get a nice seal, but avoiding blocking/plugging the line.

Ok another good suggestion, but I didn't use teflon tape. Maybe I will since I have to re-do this anyways.

another suggestion since bob is ignoring my IM's:

Tighten it as hard as you can!! Reason I was sprayin everywhere was because I thought by holding onto the filter and tightening it with a 14mm wrench was enough, until I finally listened to my dad and held the filter nut with an adjustable wrench and tightened the ˟˟˟˟˟ outta both fittings with the 14mm wrench.

dude, i wasn't ignoring you. i was at the gym. nerrrrd!

and rob, im not advising anyone to tighten the S out of anything! are you sure you aligned everything properly before tightening down? i didn't have to excessively tighten down anything. ill see if i can dig up the torque specs but it wasnt bad at all.

yea i'm pretty sure everything's aligned. It's just that when I used the double wrench method, i got a few more threads in and that tightened up everything. I guess I'm just a weakling.......

Nice writeup, I did mine a few weeks ago and what bothered me was when i pulled the filter down and set it on the ground, black fuel drained out of it, looked like someone had mixed fuel and coal. I think anyone that thinks this is not a 30k mile item is nutso

Replaced mine last night. That is cake! Definately use goggles/glasses and latex gloves. That undercoating is a bi*ch to get off! Thanks for the writeup Bob!
