Exhaust diameter (guest question)
#1
Hey all, well, as you can see from my sig, I don't drive a 4runner. I do have some questions about them, though. My brother has a 95 4runner, automatic, 4wd, V6. I'm thinking about giving him a Flowmaster muffler for Christmas, but I don't know what diameter inlet/outlet to give him. I was thinking 2.5", but would that be too big, and cost too much of a loss of torque? Also, what're the biggest tires he can fit w/o a lift? Also, at what size does one NEED to regear w/ a 4runner? It's kind of a slug already, so I don't want to make it too slow w/huge tires. Thanks for all your help, in advance.

If I remeber right the stock exhaust pipes are 1-7/8" a lot of us 2nd Gen Owners (1990-1995) have gotten custom 2-1/4" Catback exhaust systems. I don't think 2-1/2" will be too much, i've read that some people have that and love it.
As far as the largest tires you can have without a lift, I have 31s on mine and have since before I lifted it, and haven't had any rubbing issues at all. You might be able to squeeze some 32s in there but you might need to do a little cutting, not 100% sure on that though.
And for regearing, I'm running the stock gears (I looked it up about a month ago, and if i remember right mine has 4.10 gears on it) and although it's a little sluggish it has some pretty decent power (well nothing compared to a supercharged 3.4 though
) I'd say that you should probably re-gear if you go up to 33s but even then you may not need to, but it would help.
Hopefully I was able to help ya out a little, and welcome to the forum

Braden - thanks for the answers, man. Appreciate it. I'm going to try and get my bro on this forum as much as I'm on Jeeps Unlimited, in hopes that he'll get bitten by the Toy mod bug as hard as the Jeep mod bug bit me.
And out of curiosity: what're the numbers on a blown 3.4? And, what T-case do 4runners have? EDIT: Is anyone running a turn-down on their exhaust?? Help is always appreciated!

Hello Ryan. as Braden stated, the stock exhaust is very restrictive on the 2nd gens.
It would actually be better (and more money) to go with a full blown 2.25" catback setup using a non restrictive muffler.
Check out the Exhaust section on my page via my sig file below.
Stan's Headers in Auburn does excellent work, and several of us on the forum here have got "muffed" by him.
He is across from the Valley Drive-in theaters.
As for the tires, 31s can fit stock, and if he wants to go with a 32, he should fix the common sag that is present in the 2nd gen.
This can be fixed via using Downey's Heavy Duty coils in the rear.
The stock T bars up front can be cranked a bit to then lift the front to match the rear.
Info on that can be found on my website too in the mods section.
(Cranking of T bars should be accompanied by using a manual hub if going over 14.25" or so)
32s can then be put on with a minimal of front rubbing.
That can be fixed by pounding the fender seam flat in the wheel well.
If you go with 33" tires, regearing should be done.
Expensive though to do, and 4.88 or 5.29 gears should be used.
Also a Downey 1.5" spacer puck in the rear coils, and a 1" Roger Brown body lift would help with 33" tires too.
Info on the Downey coils can be found on my website, as well as contact info for them can be found there too, and in our vendor section.

Thanks for the compliment. That bridge is up on one of the trails at Reiter, in Monroe. Not super hard, but after the bridge it's pretty challenging rock crawling. It's pretty fun stuff, some Jeep guys and maybe my buddy with a 98 Tacoma (6" lift, 35" MTR's, Borla exhaust, intake) are gonna hit Reiter next Sunday. If you wanna go, email me at flynnr@spu.edu. Or, actually, go to JU trail rides forums and check out the thread about Reiter. Peace, take it easy.
