Turbo for an 86 Pickup?
#1
I own a 1986 Toyota Pickup. It doesn't have a lot of power, but I've heard that if you install a blower on your engine, it will boost the horsepower a lot. I was wondering if anyone knew of any turbos for my truck. I believe the engine is a 22RE. What would be some of the downsides to adding a blower? Would the extra power cause more wear and tear on the truck? Could I install it, or would I have to take it to a shop? Thanks for any help.

wasnt the turbo something like 22re-t? I saw one at a junkyard that my dads friend owns, he said we could have whatever we wanted. I asked about the truck and he said it was already spoken for. Bummer, would have been sweet.

Thanks for the replies. I think what I'm looking for then is a blower. Doesn't it force air into the intake? I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find one for a 22RE, or is there any reasons why you wouldn't recomend one. Thanks for the help.

No universal blower, of course, each has to be made specifically to fit the engine. There is/was a blower for the 22R, (actually from a couple of different companies) but I've never saw one for the RE. You could change the head and do the blower on the RE, but you would have to go to carburetion rather than FI. (If it wasn't for this I would have done it on my 85, but I will never own another carb engine.) Camden, B&M make blower kits for the 22R, or did at least.
THe RE-T engine had a lot of differences besides just the turbo. The turbo compressor itself is easy enough, but the systems that keep it from destroying the engine quickly is well beyond the tinkerer's capabilities. Wastegate control, detonation control, changing fuel/air requirements etc.
LC Engineering has turbo kits for the 22R. http://www.lcengineering.com/TurboKits.htm
Oh check this out! On their What's New page, LC Engineering now offers a blower kit for the RE! http://www.lcengineering.com/Whatsnew.htm

what i think the main problem with running a blower? cost! i don't understand how something that's not really all that complicated(or at least it seems) can run over $2000
however, you also might need to run forged pistons and upgrade your injectors...

THANKS! Wow, thanks for all this input so quickly. I appreciate it! So LC makes the super charger for the 22RE. (The "E" stands for EFI right?) That's great, I would really like to get that kit for my truck and boost its horsepower. What kind of injectors would you recomend I upgrade too? Are there any other precautions? I'll probably look into forged pistons, because I'll need something stronger to handle the power. Thanks again guys, you've all been a big help.

From my experience, you can get away with low levels of boost on a stock motor with stock components (no forged stuff). But thats on a healthy motor with no existing problems and doesn't have a bunch of miles. (Also, that experience is based on GM motors; more qualified Toyota gearheads than myself would have to answer whether that holds true for your 22r/22re motors.) However with low levels of boost you won't be seeing a lot of the power your looking for. But, if you wanted you could start with a tuned down supercharger (read: low boost) on a stock motor and run that until you got the money to dump in the components that would allow you to turn your boost up.

Got $6,300+ for the supercharger motor from ToyotaPerformance? Then add to that all the other changes necessary to get it up and running
Unless you really need some freaky power and have $ falling out your
it doesn't seem like much of an option. Even if you only bought the supercharger, all the changes required add up fast.
You can get around 145hp out of the 22re for far less and for a little truck that is pretty sufficeint. Check out LC's motors for an idea what to build and maybe just get a head from them and do the bottom end locally. If you can do some work yourself the $ savings add up.

Thanks again. The engine still runs perfectly - like most Toyotas. It only has 84,000 miles on it as well. Looks like I'd better start saving my $$$.

Before I spent that kind of money I'd put a FI small block Chevy in it. They're cheap & plentiful, easy to work on, easy to hotrod. Install kits are available to make it easy to do. If you resist the urge to use too much horsepower, the trans and tcase will live with a stock small block.
