What does AAL do exactly?

i've been researching the threads to find the most reasonable way to lift my 86 4x yota and i'm leaning toward the torsion bar/aal route. this is a beater for getting me around the farm and into town everynow and then, so i probably won't be doing alot of crawling here in north alabama. 1" -1.5" is all i'm really looking for.
my question is.
what exactly does adding a leaf do? does it make the leaf springs stiffer so the everything sits up higher?

thanx all!!

It makes them a little stiffer and alters the arch as well. In a pickup with little to no load in the bed, it may stiffen the springs to the point of being harsh(er). For 4Runners and trucks with loads, it isn't hardly as noticeable.
