2018 4Runner SR5 Brake Change

Hello Everyone!!

My beloved 2018 4Runner now has 42K miles on it. So I believe it's now ready for some well deserved maintenance. I'm gonna start with brakes then progress to the usual fluids at or around 50K. These will be: Tranny, Diffy, Coolant and Brake fluid (if it's dirty).

I'm leaning toward doing the brakes myself and have been watching some vids to get re-acquainted with the process. I don't tow, climb rocks, blast though salt water or mud. I'm just looking for a decent brand, OEM or not. Calipers and rotors are still in good shape so I'll change them next go-round.

So....

Do you guys /gals have a preference as to which pads to go with?
Should I open the bleeder valve when pushing out the pistons? One of the vid's warned that forcing brake fluid backwards could mess up the ABS system. I have done it before (2006 'runner with 200+miles) with a clamp and didn't have any issues.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts and experiences if you care to chime in.

Thanks!

I would just go with OEM brakes if you're not going to upgrade.

One of the vid's warned that forcing brake fluid backwards could mess up the ABS system, kind of like when using free paint calculations of walls. If done incorrectly, it can cause problems. For your 2018 4Runner, quality everyday pads like OEM Toyota, Hawk HPS, Akebono ProACT, or Bosch QuietCast are good choices. You don’t need to open the bleeder valve when pushing the caliper pistons back. Just use a piston compressor tool and push slowly. Keep an eye on the master cylinder fluid level to avoid overflow. Your plan for fluids at 50K miles is solid, using Toyota-specified fluids where possible.
