If anyone can identify these plugs from my 89 4runner sr5 please let me know what I should be looking for. Im trying to get speakers finally wired up into my dash along with a head unit and It would be amazing If I could just use the factory harness since almost none of my plugs are snipped off yet. I ordered some on amazon that look like these after someone else on a forum claimed they used them but they were unfortunately the wrong plugs. Crutchfield's second option for my 4r is also incorrect as mine don't have bullet style plugs inside, just spades.
After digging around I still can't find anything that looks much like them. Anywhere I should start looking?
Are you looking for something that will plug into that connector, then you can connect the other end to the speakers you're using?
One other option is to find the oem speakers. i finally got the oem rear speakers for my 1st gen and they sound so much better than the aftermarket ones that the previous owner had installed.
I am trying to find the plug that plugs into this yeah. I'm not trying to use oem speakers, I dont even have the ones originally in here. Someone ripped them out a long time ago.
So this may or may not help, my 91 pickup just had speakers mounted to the grilles under the dash, after digging at the Yota yard I found boxes that came on the 4 runners that weren’t on the pickups. They plugged into the factory speaker plugs and then went into the box and had the normal speaker connectors.
BUT this would be on a second gen runner not a first gen, so I don’t know if the first gen runners came with these boxes or not?? But the factory speakers had that plug in your hand in the pic and they just plugged into the factory speaker, once anyone upgraded they would just cut that plug and crimp a new connector on.
Here is a listing on eBay that I’m talking about.
No, first gen just had the speakers screwed right into the dash with two screws, then covered with a grille. Those connectors did make for a pretty solid connection directly onto the speaker. Not the worlds best speaker, but way better than sawing a huge hole in a door panel.
The speaker kit Toyota had Bitd was the same for any RN5/RN6. Came with the radio brackets, too, iirc.

But that's 4Runner. I wonder what a 1990-1995 truck (not 4Runner) speaker was like. 1st gen 4Runners had more in common with the next gen truck than the evolving 4Runner
It seems like there have been some changes/inconsistencies in wiring harnesses for these trucks in general. What I do know is that my 4runner has some portions of the harness updated to 1990-on and some of it has older connectors like up to 89. My truck also had a lot of interesting power options like for the door locks, power windows, and was sr5 in general. I'm most likely going to have to chop them but I will be okay with waiting a little bit longer to see if I can find original plugs. Maybe off a junkyard car with busted speakers? Id be okay with chopping one of those looms and then connecting those wires to the spades on the speakers I bought.
The connector in your pic looks just like what I'm using. Same purple/pink wires too. This is the speaker side connector I'm using. There is no identifying marks on it though.

That doesnt exactly look like mine, I may order some of that connector off amazon that let me do a return but mine are not bullet connectors on the harness side.
1989 is a weird year for 4Runners. To give good help when someone has a 1989 it’s really helpful to know the production date and model number.
Toyota was never inconsistent with their builds, but mid year model changes do create some confusion
My door sticker says 10/88.
If anyone has a link to adapters for these let me know. Ill keep looking for some used plugs or an adapter thank you for solving the case.

My door sticker says 10/88 and the truck is a hodge podge of pre and post model year change. Absolutely nothing consistent about it.
You could always splice in a short wire just below that connector, then run that wire to your new speaker. I don't mean simply twisting wires together, I mean using real splices. there's a few places on your body harness where Toyota used them. Great way to join multiple wires.
Whatever speaker you use, do a dry run to make sure it's gonna fit ok. Toyota used that flat, right angle connector because of space limitations.
The RN6# 4Runners went until 03/89, then the next gen came out in 04/89. Considering new models get released early September that meant the 1989 RN6 was only available for about half the year before the next gen was released. iirc, the latter ones were classified as 1990 models because of emissions. But not 100% on that
Then I guess the mystery is solved, crutchfield seems to be the only site that sells this Metra 72-8101 connector for it. Amazon and other sites have listings for them but all say discontinued or otherwise unavailable. Funny enough the rear speakers use the more common style connector.
Might as well try to find the largest speakers I possibly can to put in back there, Up front theres no room but down the rear quarter panels its a good idea to throw in some sound deadening mats right?
I have sound deadening material (kinda like Dynamat) on the 1/4 panel walls and the rear wheel housing. Sure makes the 1/4 panel sound stronger when you rap the outside with your knuckles. You don't need to blanket the entire area. You can do strips and have the same effect. did that in the doors, too.
Mine came with alpine speakers in the rear, and not great ones. I found the oem ones on eBay and they made a huge difference. I see an eBay seller that's has a set right now. Not a bad price, but I'd offer lower. They've been posted for awhile.
part number to search with is 86160-89110
Thanks for that. I may just go with the surround foam style bucket insulators to keep things simple. There is a single speaker in my driver's rear quarter and I doubt its factory since I can see spliced wires on the way back there, I just havent been able to open up the panels yet.
I'm thinking I'll leave the OEM to those trying to full restore theirs, I'm gonna be okay with some low-medium range brand name somethings in mine. At least I can do a clean job of it now.
