What Power Steering pump do I actually have?!

Greetings All,
Apologies if this has been previously covered, but I'm in the midst of 6 day weeks, and ten hour days. I've hit another snag with the most hated vintage truck in Louisiana. Power steering pump has been whining for a while. Took to a locally recommended company to have rebuilt, they said it was trashed and a rebuild might last a month. Ordered a reman pump..; It lines up with the bracketry, best I can tell. It's the suction tube that has me boggled. Whatever I have does not line up with the replacement pump, at all. From doing the best I can with online research, I have no idea what power steering pump I have. (I've looked at 85 and alter, 90's, etc...) The supply suction tube doesn't even come close to lining up for the bolt to secure it, and I know that's a part you don't throw away... No idea what pump I have. I'll toss in some pics, but I'm lost on this one. Any and all, respectful thoughts. are welcomed. =)

from what I can see that looks like an '80 pump. This image is from the '80 FSM.

That's what my FSM shows as well. What the parts house is selling looks 'something' like it but, as mentioned before, the suction fitting that the return line hooks up to won't be able to be bolted in place. Thanks for the reply, looks like it's time to modify some stuff.

Interesting. I think it is probably from another Toyota model of roughly the same year. Maybe a Celica?

Are you just going to modify the bracket?

I honestly don't know. All the parts stores are showing this one as the replacement ps pump. I tried to fit it on the truck, and I don't think all the bolt holes will even line up correctly. Not really sure what to do at this point because the fitting for the return line, if the pump fits in the bracket, will be awfully close to the header after I have to drill it out to fit where the mounting bolt is on this new pump. I'm currently searching as many bone yards as I can to see if there's maybe one around that can be rebuilt. If anyone else has run across this issue, please feel free to drop some wisdom.

You could switch to a later style pump if you can find the pump and bracket. I gave up on the '79 / '80 style pump and am running an '82 Celica pump (I had the bracket laying around in a pile of parts). I couldn't find a suitable 79/80 replacement pump either. Based on my experience, I think a ps pump and bracket from an '81 -'84 22r would bolt on. Later (85 and up) 22r/22re might work too but I'm not sure.

Ok, so here's what I've learned. In the 1980 model year, Toyota swapped some stuff up between July and August of 1980. If you look up the IFS caliper conversion kit on Marlin Crawler's site it will give better detail. In short, they swapped the style of wheel hubs used, and I'm guessing power steering pumps as well. These pumps, that I'm guessing very few of us have is the same one used on Cressidas (up to 82), and on FJ's up till 1990, if I read correctly. A little more expensive than the $100 Cardones you can get from Auto Zone, but they do still exist. I'll be back when I get one and see how it installs. Hopefully this info can help someone else along the way.

It has also occurred to me that the truck may have come stock without PS. Bet that wasn't fun.

Cool that you figured it out and can still get the parts!
