first time posting here. New to engine building and I always like to learn as I go and buy getting my hands dirty.
I picked up this 22re for a rebuild project and the only issue was it was seized, everything else looked good so I got it anyways hoping for the best.

I tore it all down and kept everything organized, when i was taking out the pistons and crankshaft I found a spun(melted/fused) rod bearing


And a spun crank bearing


No big deal those are easily replaced/fixed so that's not my main question.

I cleaned up the bearing seats(bearing journals? I don't know what you would call this) and found there to be a small crack on both sides of the oil passage.





​​So my question: is this fixable? Has anyone fixed this before? What are the costs? Block done for?

I think i would call that a main journal “web”. I don’t know what would cause the crack or how serious it is. I would have to ask the machinist.

Good eye. I've never seen that before. It can't be good and I don't think I'd put my money into that block but I would ask a machinist.

When I don't know what to call something, I search for "thing anatomy". Most of the time it's because I forgot what it's called or in the case of actual anatomy - never did know.

What did the bearing races look like at the main journal where the crack is? If it looked good then I would assume it was being oiled properly. To me, it depends on how the engine will be used and how much money there is in the budget. That crack might have been there for many, many miles.

I'd find somebody that could magnaflux the block. that would give you the answer you need. I can’t tell very well from the side photo if the “crack” extends very far.

Though many things can be repaired, I don’t think it’s worth the cost. I’d go to a yard and pull an engine to rebuild if that crack is an issue.
