Hey guys new here ! Just really trying to get your guys opinion on my 22re engine that i took to my local machine shop to be bored out .20. Was originally going to take it to a more high end shop but wait time was 3 weeks!!! So decided to try out my local machine shop but when i went to pick up my block i saw these lines going from top to bottom which i think its from when he has honing it seems like stones would get stuck in the cylinder. Anyways i asked him about it and he said its normal and is going to run fine. Im to deep into this build to just put it together and have it burn oil on me. Really need your guys opinion if you guys think its worth getting re cut at another shop and just take the loss or continue the build..
you should have had the shop clean and check the block prior to doing the bores. i wouldn’t run that with those constricted coolant passages. it’s also not really possible to bore these .20 over; .020 is more probable.
how can you be “too deep” when you didn’t get the block cleaned/checked etc.?

3 weeks wait for a higher end shop (that would do the job right) isn't bad especially when you look at some of the wait times for some of the 22re specialty shops that are months and months out.
I don't know about the depth of the hone scratches, but it sure doesn't look like a good crosshatch pattern, which is what you wanted to see. Makes me wonder why your local "machinist" didn't have a wait list. I would take it to the "high end shop" and ask their opinion - shouldn't be any wait for that. And I agree that the block should have been cleaned. Did the local guy suggest that?
You could buy a cylinder honing tool and see if you can get a good cross-hatch finish. Then see how deep any grooves may be. You can't do worse than what you have. I'd scrap that block and buy a shop built short block to be the foundation of your build.
Not to pile on, but i’ve honed exactly one block in my driveway and it looked better than that. I would bring it to the better machine shop and see what they say. It can be hard to tell from photos.
From an automotive machine shop owner who moderates a Chevelle forums:
"Those are some really strange marks ???? Cant say I have ever seen anything like that. I have had stones chatter and they don't make perfectly straight up and down marks like that. Same with the boring tool. When it gets dull and chatters the marks are still not straight up and down like that. Not sure what to make of it but I dont think I would run it like that.
Also, the hone pattern just does not look right. The crosshatch seems way too shallow and uneven. Its possible they did not leave enough metal to hone after they bored it. Honing another .001" out of it in a proper machine might clean it up but there is no way to tell other than trying.
I might post the first picture on one of the machine shop forums I go to and see if anyone has seen anything like it."
follow-up....
""General consensus from several other machinists is that it was from the hone chattering and it is not acceptable to try and run it like that".
"I was going to sign up over there and reply but really dont have time. Send him a link to this forum and he can look at it".

Reason: updated info
Thanks guys for all the replies it is much appreciated got the block back from the shop after a week
. I decided to take it to another machine shop that i was going to in the first place and got the block re honed and decked. He was able to hone it very little amount to keep it still in spec. Cylinders look way better now.
By a chance does anybody know the Piston ring end gap for the 22re engine with ring in size .020" . These are the measurements i found and just want to sure.
1st ring- 0.009-0.018
2nd ring - 0.023-0.032
3rd rings- 0.007- 0.022
Thanks guys
