Hey everyone,
i just installed a used auto trans in my 99 4runner and i got 3.5 qts out of the pan and the guy who sold it to me drained it from the tailshaft. I heard fluid sloshing in the converter.
I'm buttoned up, ready to start it.
do i add 9 qts to the fill tube and just start it or is there a specific procedure to priming a transmission. Thx !!

I'm lousy at transmissions, but from what I understand, once everything is sealed up and ready to go, check the fill on the dip stick. Fill it until it's correct on the dip stick. Whether it takes 1 Qt. , or 10 Qt.s, just go with what the dipstick tells you.
If it were me, I'd fill it, then run it for a short time to make sure the fluid has circulated, and got all the air out, THEN check it. Isn't that checked with the engine running? I'd make certain the dip stick was right, before starting it, then ensure the fluid level is correct with the engine running, as specified.
Here's the entry from the FSM:
There's a few entries from the FSM. Before you run the engine, fill to the "cool" range. Then run the engine , shifting the tranny through the various shift positions. Once the engine is nicely warmed up, fully to operation temp, check the dipstick again. If the fluid level isn't in in the "warm" section add fluid until it is. DO NOT OVERFILL!
