91 stock steering wheel installment

i just recently picked up a 91’ pick up as my first car, i knew and still know very little about this vehicle but i love it, the previous owner had some aftermarket steering wheel that was just too small for my liking, so i went on facebook market place and found a steering wheel with the description of “89 toyota steering wheel” and i bought it as the steering wheel looked like my buddies (a 94’ pick up) - fast forward today, i am trying to install the steering wheel but it won’t fit into the hub. i was pretty bummed out but i just want to know where i went wrong, i live and i learn you know ?

rookie mistake ? probably

here is my truck by the way

Looks like there's an aftermarket steering wheel adapter hub currently on the steering column. You'll have to remove that hub from the splined shaft, then the stock steering wheel will go directly onto the splined shaft with no hub. You might have an easier time pulling the hub off the shaft by installing the aftermarket wheel and pulling on it, but be sure to put the nut on the hub (don't tighten the nut down) so that when the hub slides off the shaft, you don't smack yourself with the steering wheel.

Agree with above, but you will probably need a steering wheel puller kit. Possibly available from the loaner tools at Autozone or other parts stores.

Agree. Clean that circular brass ring on the backside of the OEM steering wheel with a green scrub pad or fine sandpaper. It's the contact for the horn. There should be an OEM spring loaded contact plunger beneath that aftermarket mounting adapter.

That spring loaded plunger wears out fast, too. A lot of folks have put a fired .22 cal shell casing on over the plunger. that's .22 short, not a .22 LR. Wears a LOT longer. Fits perfectly, too. Otherwise, be ready to replace the plunger pretty often.

Sorry, just wanted to toss that out there.

I have a fired powered nail gun blank shell on my plunger. Just make sure you thoroughly clean out the spent residue for a good contact.
