Mysterious oil consumption 95 3.0
My 95 (300k + on ODO) is running through 1 quart every 1000 miles of Pennzoil 10W30 high mileage conventional with Lucas high mileage stabilizer. New PCV valve. New top end done 3K ago -new heads, seals, gaskets etc. Not leaking oil. No smoke from tailpipe.
I have an EGR related CEL light on so maybe a circulation/ blow by situation? Kinda stumped on where this oils going.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would start with a compression test followed by a cylinder leak down. You need to first find out the condition of the rings. Also once the vehicle has cooled down after a long drive remove the radiator cap and count to 30 whole looking at the coolant in the radiator. Any bubbles come to the surface at all?

Thanks for the insights. Fuel mileage is around 17-18 which seems expected. Power feels kinda weak but it’s the only second gen I’ve driven and I believe they’re known to be pretty weak and slow, so I’m not sure if it’s normal or not. I can drive in all conditions with no problem it’s just not exactly exhilarating.

Compression test, dry and wet, followed by Leak down test should be informative. My guess, with no test results, is redoing the top-end may have put extra stress on the pistons and rings. But the leak down should show if that’s an issue.
By some manufacturers standards 1 qt per 1,000 miles is within acceptance range. Toyota would start to consider that excessive. I wouldn’t like oil burning at that rate, but what you decide to do is really determined by what your overall plans for the vehicle are. If you always check levels and keep full you won’t destroy the engine. From my experience once a vehicle starts consuming oil the rate only accelerates.

At a quart in a thousand miles, it's not likely that you'd see any exhaust smoke.
I've seen 22r engines that produced no visible smoke until oil consumption approached a quart in 3 or 4 hundred miles.
Is there any oily residue to be felt in the exhaust pipe?? I'd expect little or none at this point.
