Hello, I have an issue with my left CV axle, I think inside the hub somewhere. 1999 GEN 1, SR5, ASIN manual hubs. If I pull the hub and find an issue where I need to replace the entire CV axle can I run without it in place until I get the replacement. Obviously no wheelin, just around town trips.

 

It’s been a while since I had my ‘94 pickup with the manual hubs, but fuzzy memory is saying it would be bad not having support for that wheel bearing in the center.

 

I wouldn't run without the axle in place. Just unlock the hub and keep it out of 4WD and that axle won't turn. Since you have to unbolt the shock, sway bar, and ball joint to replace the axle I recommend waiting until you have the replacement and do it all at once.

 

The manual hubs don't need the outer CV axle end in place to keep it in place, like the solid hub/ADD axles. Sort of, it's a press-in interference fit on the ADD axles, but technically speaking it's the end of the CV shaft that ensures it can't work its way out.

But the inside end on the center diff will dump oil out if there's no CV shaft there. At the very least, you'd need that 'tulip' end plugged into the diff.
