1992 Toyota Pickup restoration

Well about 4 months ago I picked up my 92. Paid what I thought was a reasonable price. Truck has since been solid. 4wheeldrive, 5spd, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control and everything works as it should. Truck came from Pennsylvania so I knew there was some rust up under there but from what I could tell it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. Since I live in South Texas AC was the first priority. Retrofit kit, some new lines, swapped the oil, vacum, charge and bam I have cold air. I had thoughts of a SAS and a bunch of other stuff but the deeper I dug the nicer this truck turned out to be. So I've went the direction of doing some rust cleaning and prevention. I popped the bed off one day with the Intention of cleaning up the frame and using some corroseal (awesome stuff) look it up. Anyway I got the bed off and it completely snowballed from there. From the cab back is bare frame. Leaf springs, shocks, all bushings, disc brake conversion kit, seals, bearings, brake lines along with of course a full cleaning and coat of corroseal along with some undercoating. From the cab forward isn't bad at all due to an oil leak it's had for who knows how long. Thank God for oil leaks. Here is a video from when I pulled the bed off. I will definitely have more pictures coming soon as it progresses if anyone wants to follow. This is being done in my backyard under a carport. And I've never really done anything other then basic mechanical stuff. Kinda learning as I go. So 🐻 with me. Update it won't let me upload the video. Pictures will be coming tomorrow.

Update

So I've finished rust cleaning and converting. I did away with all the old brake drums and components off the rear. Pulled the diff out and adjusted the backlash a little. Everything else looks solid, tomorrow I'll be pressing in new bearings, seals and putting it back together. Then of course it will get the same cleaning and rust treatment

Was in San Anonio for many years. Moved to Seguin 2 years ago.
Kicked around Wilson & Bee Counties for a looooong time too.
How you got time to tear a rig down like that AND keep your yard looking like that? LOL

Looks like you've discovered historical evidence of what may have been a backing plate at one time.
Did you check the inside of your frame? I power washed the inside of my 4R (as best I could). You would not believe the dirt and gravel that flew out the rear tubing.
Especially had piled up at the up-bow for the door and wheel well.

Nice area tho. I spent better part of a year and half in those two hotels across I-10 on hwy 123. Mostly what was a Marriott.
Love that City bbq over in Luling (?)

hahaha... Man the yard was looking terrible due to all my time going into the truck. Got up early Thursday morning when it was nice and cool to knock it out before going to work on the yota. Ol Bee County, man I lived in Rockport as a kid and got in a ˟˟˟˟ ton of trouble and ended up in the juvenile facility over there more then a few times.

I duct taped a wire brush to a piece of electrical conduit and ran it down inside the frame for as long as I could stand. Rinsed it best I could a blew a bunch of corroseal down in there with the air hose. That was best I could do. That little cross tube was in the worst shape but it'll hold for atleast another 10 years

That was a mother you know what. I don't even feel like doing anything else today. Cleaning and painting probably won't happen till Monday. Disc brake kit won't be in for a few weeks. Glad to get rid of all that trash. Red stuff is excess grease I put around my o-ring. Not RTV. Felt like I needed to throw that out there

Update, still no brake kit. I was told it's going to take even longer then expected. So I'm going all the way and I can come back for the brakes. And I ordered rwd shackles instead of 4wd. Bushings are different sizes so I'm waiting on those. And I broke my abs sensor. About to start on the underside of the bed. Still need to make a few brake lines, sorta procrastinating on those. Reusing the rusty bolts kind of annoys me. Probably should have soaked them in some evaporust and painted them but it'll be fine. Not like this truck will ever see a salty road again

Not bad for a 30 year old truck from Pennsylvania

Tackled the bed today. Still need to complete all the little brackets and stuff that go back under it. Broke alot of the little bolts taking them out. Rust got ground down, coated with more corroseal and painted. Sides of the bed needed minor body work where it was pitted and some very small holes. After some sanding, acid etch primer a and a coat of raptor liner I'm super happy with the results. The body line of the cab and front fenders are going to get the exact same treatment. Super pumped with the look.
