Good source for OEM parts. Need a new speedometer cable.
I've been searching for an OEM parts vendor here but all the old links seem dead. Any good sources these days? I need a new speedometer cable. I tried greasing it but it's still noisy. Stupid design apparently makes disassembly impossible.
For parts like that I go to Ebay 1st. I got a used speedo cable about 5 years back and works like new. If not, then there are various online salvage parts search sites that find parts. I got a good used PS gear that way.
I'm in the SE of Virginia and found the cheapest OEM Toyota parts are from https://parts.conicellitoyotaofconsh...5--2-4l-l4-gas. Seems all the Toyota dealerships use the same parts software. They will list the parts with the OEM part number even if discontinued. Using that number helps Ebay and online searches. Good luck.
I found one at Toyota Parts Deal for $115.50 with tax & shipping but I've never dealt with them before. The part number is 83710-89190 in case anyone else is looking one.
Check out this EOM Toyota Dealership cable as it says it supercedes 83710-89190.Toyota does that a lot so newer numbers are the same as some old numbers. Search for the new number. Also says it fits 4-runner and trucks
Right now I'm trying to decide between Conicelli and Discount Parts Monster. Conicelli has lower shipping but charges tax but DPM charges more for shipping but doesn't seem to charge tax. I have a discount code from each so I'm trying to see what comes out less. There's few other parts I want to get and so far it's a toss up.
the cable i purchased 8-17-2021 from a local dealer cost $107.89, but it is for an '87 4runner (83710-89151). still, better price than elsewhere that requires shipping.
Just be aware that there are several different speedometer cables for different years and drivetrain configurations, so there will be different part numbers depending on what your vehicle is (I know that wallytoo already knows this).
try McGeorge Toyota. parts website
Taking into account parts prices, shipping cost, and if there will be sales tax, I've found McGeorge to be the most reasonable on a consistent basis.
I built an order one time on ToyotaPartsDeal and the shipping cost was insane for an order that was going to weigh less than a pound.
I rarely order just one item online because of factoring in shipping costs. I wait till i need several items where the shipping costs get greatly reduced per item. If I just need a single part I use the local dealer.
I tried McGeorge but I had issues with their site. I could not enter my state, WA, into their address field. It seems like they don't ship to Washington state. I then tried Paypal and that went straight into pay now with shipping or anything.
Maybe I'll try later.
I decided to call my local dealer. I mentioned the prices I found online and they worked with me. They quoted me $106 for the cable so it worked out a little better than the lowest price because shipping always made it more.
I also bought a couple of taillights because I couldn't stand the custom aftermarket ones mine has. They gave me a good discount on them as well.
I changed out the cable today. It was quite a job. For some reasons it was actually harder to remove it than to put the new one in. There's not much room to snake the cable around the top of the transmission. The job is done.
I decided to see if I could take the old cable apart. It's actually possible. I used a heat gun to the heat the plastic part that attaches to the speedometer side of the cable. It came off fairly easily. The end of the cable had a plastic end that is attached to it. I heated it up too and it needed a bit of effort too separate it. It went flying somewhere in my garage so I'll need search around for it. If I find it I see if I can reattach it. The cable was quite dry when I pulled it out of its case. It can easily greased now. If I find the plastic piece, I'll have an extra cable.
I knew there was a way to take one apart.
