I just saved this 87' Custom Cab 5 speed 4x4 from being ripped apart at the wreckers. It has 188k (actual miles) and a 22r that isn't the original engine, the previous owner said his son put that engine in and it's from a Toyota motorhome. I believe it's original color is Dark Metallic Gray #138 with a Gray? interior.
It obviously needs work and I have a couple things in the works already. I found a complete 22re engine with engine wiring harness, efi fuel tank, ECM, ECU, airbox, and smog stuff (i'm in CA).
I plan on sourcing a EFI 4x4 harness for the cab and just plugging everything together (in a perfect world of course). I've searched all over for these questions but what i've found is just how to transfer EFI parts to a 22r block, I'm putting a whole EFI motor in a carbureted truck. What I need to know is am I missing anything? Are there any tips and tricks I should know about? Anything to look out for?
It does still have the back seat and armrest plus some garbage that has been cleaned out. The seat is in rough shape and i'm going to see if I can get it reupholstered or maybe put in a Corbeau bench seat.
I had some free time yesterday and was able to clean the trash out and pull the nasty tan carpet that was installed on top of the original grey carpet. There were mushrooms, It was gross.
I'm really surprised at the small amount of rust.
I don't have any information on the sticker, but I wanted to give you a huge thumbs up on the truck. I really hope you keep the build thread going with your progress. I'm looking forward to seeing it come together.
Found these on the sides of the glove box. Anyone know anything about these?
That sticker was common on '84-'89 Trucks and 4runners...sometimes placed in the glovebox rather than the sides I believe. Last month I purchased a recreation from Toyota4Low...very good quality. You can find him by searching online. He also has an Etsy store where he sells pretty much every reproduction decal for this generation of trucks.
Sorry it's been a bit since I updated. Work. That's it.
The rear drive shaft was in the bed when I bought it so I took a quick peek under and everything was still there. I got it running the other day and when I let the clutch out there was a loud banging coming from the drive shaft. I crawled under and found that the carrier bearing is completely shot. I pulled it and while staring at it I thought "what else did this destroy". Well, I'm pretty sure I have to rebuild my rear third member. It's got some play and a clunk while turning. Great.
i think anyone that rides in the back would appreciate a Corbeau, though they might lose some legroom because i think the seatback is thicker but i know after almost 40 years those rear seat springs aren't gonna do a whole lot comfortwise. Price cost between a new seat and having it reupholstered is probably gonna be a wash.
The floors are in surprisingly good shape. I looked at one with a friend of mine was interested in buying and most of the metal under the back seat was toast. I thought about picking it but it was just gonna be too big of project and i was at the point with my old 81 Trekker of sorta being tired of that much work.
