1992 Toyota Pickup 22RE turbo conversion and build up
Hello,
After stalking the forums since 2013 it is finally time for me to finish a build that I've always wanted to do. I am the second owner of a 1992 Toyota Pickup 2wd Base model with a 22RE and a 5 speed. I purchased the truck from the original owner who special ordered it from the factory in 1992 and had passed away several months prior to me purchasing the truck in the fall of 2018. I was a freshman in college and I had been daily driving my 1993 4wd 4cyl 5 speed pickup on 31.5x10.5's with 4.10's so needless to say I craved a vehicle that got better mileage, was quicker but still practical, and had air conditioning. I bought the 2wd for $2,250 and drove it 90 miles home with absolutely no brakes due to a brake line that had ruptured when I was test driving the truck. It had 95k on the clock and some body rust, but it was pretty clean. It was my DD in the months without snow or salt up here in the frozen tundra, and my best friend and I did a full service and tuneup and drove it 2000 miles on a road trip out west. I put almost 25k miles on the truck and love it to death, but I want it to be my fast fun vehicle now that I have a reliable 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI for my DD.
My plan is to get a running engine and all the other spare parts I need from my grandfather's scrapyard, rebuild the engine with low compression pistons and a cam, design and fabricate a tubular equal length turbo header for the rebuilt spare engine and swap it into the 2wd pickup with a megasquirt to manage it all. The original engine runs like an absolute top and I do not want to ruin it, but I do not feel bad for abusing one of the 12 or so 22re's I have available.
Now before I go any further I want to preface this entire build. I know that the 22RE is not the best candidate for a forced induction application. I know that it is designed like an industrial equipment engine. I know that many people have tried to make them make a bunch of power and they're nothing but money pits. My TDI Jetta makes 150hp and 240lb-ft stock, and my goal is to make a similar torque number with a turbo 22RE. I have no desire to make 300hp, I know that I can't afford to attempt to make a number like that, and I don't want to. I want a reliable turbo truck with a very usable power band that's fun to drive and I believe I will be able to. I cannot afford to buy a RZ or 3S or a JZ series engine at this point, and I want to be able to maintain a lot of the stock equipment as economically as I can. I have a Megasquirt one, a LCE Performance master rebuild kit with stock 22RTE replacement pistons that are 0.040" over, dual metal timing chain kit and all the other reliability goodies, and a couple of potential transmission options that I'll get into at a later point. I plan to purchase a DOA turbo cam, some bigger injectors and the rest of the equipment needed for the turbo system. I'm going to be using a Maxpeeding Rods turbo, but I have not decided what size I will purchase yet. I am planning on retrieving my truck and the engine in the next week or two and figured this would be the perfect opportunity to start this thread. I'd love to hear any input or lessons people have had with similar builds and I'm excited to get rolling.
Once I get the truck I'll start posting pictures along with the full build write-up. I want to hold myself accountable and have all of my information and specs in one convenient spot. My cousin is also nearing the end of his N/A 2JZ swap in his 1994 2wd pickup so if either of our builds interests you let me know and I'll try to bully him into doing a full build thread.
Take it easy!

I was looking at this years ago but since decided I just wanted to leave it alone, I did come across this bit of good info.
