Motor Swap 1985 Pickup Truck with 1990 motor 22RE
Guys I need help bad. I have a 1985 Toyota pickup with a 22RE motor, I blew the motor so I swapped in a running motor out of a 1990 truck. I am utilizing the wiring harness and ECU from the 1985 truck. I had to splice in some connectors such as injectors but kept most of the 85 harness as is. I am stuck now I can’t get it to run on its own. The injectors won’t fire. I have 12V at all of my injectors and I have tested continuity between the injectors grounds (white wire, white/red wire) back to my ECU(No. 10/No. 20) and have continuity. I know I have spark, compression, and fuel pressure. I took back some of the harness insulation between the intake manifold and passenger side fender to where the injector grounds split off and if I run a jumper wire from the battery ground to this splice and pulse the wires together as someone is starting the vehicle it starts up great and will run great as long as I continue to pulse the ground jumper to the splice, as soon as I stop it dies. I am wondering what I am missing...there are only 2 input signals to the ecu telling it to ground and fire the injectors being the IGF and Ne signals but I have not found a way to test either of these signals or even a spot elsewhere in the harness I can confirm continuity........I am using the 1985 ecu with the 1990 motor, I’m not sure this is what is screwing me up or not but I’d like to rule every last thing out before I buck up for an ECU(I don’t have the 1990 ecu). Any thoughts are appreciated, thank you guys!

I am using the 90 injectors, what makes them incompatible? I know the harness in 85 was a square style connector and the injectors from 90 were a round style connector, but I spliced the 90 round connectors into my 85 harness. Once the connector is taken care of isn’t the signal to the injectors the same?

You used the wrong injectors !! Your 85 injectors used what is called the a solenoid resistor( injectors are a solenoids) mounted on the right inner fender looks like a aluminum block that is the heat sink for the resistor. I would guess one could sit down and figure out the difference and how to generate the correct signal if you can do the math and have the hours to spend . Myself just get the correct injectors .
What was wrong with your original ones ??
Mixing an engine Harness an a ECU will cause much frustration.
Best of Luck!!

And also you must be using the 90 intake if you are I believe the the tps is different but the 85 tps will bolt on you might have to change the paddle from the 85 throttle body. I’m running a mid 90’s intake on my 86
at this point you have 3 options
Swap the 85 injectors in and any other senors that are compatible
Get a 90 ecu and change the harness to match
Or go with a mega squirt and be done with it all
