Pulling 22re, disconnecting tranny

Hello guys, I’ve been a lurker and now that I finally have a Toyota I’m a member. Right now I’m in the process of pulling my 22re (previous owner let the timing chain put an 1/8th inch groove in the cover and it has a terrible rod knock). I have everything disconnected and I have the manual transmission unbolted from the motor. My question is, do I have to disconnect the driveshaft and everything and slide the tranny back, or can I just lift the motor and have it separate? Thanks guys, happy to be here.

IF you want to move the tranny rearwards, yes, you have to drop one end of the driveshaft or the other.

Having said that, I believe that you can pull the motor without moving the transmission at all. Just unbolt it. The motor comes out at an angle, nose up. As far as I know, many take the motor and transmission out as a unit, and separate them after they have them out completely. Just a much easier way to do it, I understand. 4 easy to reach bolts for the driveshaft, rather than all the impossible-to-reach bolts around the bell housing.
The reverse is true as well.

Does this help at all?

no, you don't need to disconnect the drivehaft or slide the transmission back. if you have disconnected everything necessary, the engine will move forward and can then be removed. sometimes, you might need to lift the engine a bit first to get it off of the engine mounts, then slide it forward.

I second this. Exactly how I've done it multiple times. A ratchet strap from one frame rail to the other under the transmission will hold it up while the engine is out.
