91' 3vze 4Runner here. Got some issue with the battery/alternator maybe. As I drive the dash light for battery lights up and stays for 10-30 sec then goes off. The funny thing is that as long as the light is on the meter for battery voltage is on max (ca. 18 v). When the light dissappears, the voltage drops to normal level (ca. 15-16 or around the middle of the right scale segment) Is this normal? What is the issue? Any help is appreciated, thanks! Here you can see the arrow at max voltage.
Most auto parts stores will check the battery and alternator for free. I agree that the alternator could be having issues, but I have also seen failing batteries cause high voltage because the alternator is working harder trying to charge it. Another thing to check is all the wiring from the alternator to the battery (don't forget the grounds). If something is corroded or failing, it could cause intermittent problems. If the battery tests fine, remove the terminals and clean both sides well.
