Transmission output stud size?

Recently purchased a tacoma. (97 2.7 manuel 4x4) The guy I bought it from removed the driveshaft because of a bad ujoint and just ran it in 4 high. he couldnt find the nuts that go on the transmission output studs. I am wondering if anyone could tell me the thread pattern I need.? Searched the forum, and couldn't find anything but photos no actual sizes or specs.

I don't recall off hand, but I wouldn't use any old nut here as the OEM nut is pretty stout, I would order from a dealer.

Take one into an auto parts store and ask them to run it through a die. If just a nut, as them to run a tap through it. Either way. That'll tell you exactly what you need to know about the threads. Heck, they might have some of the bolts/nuts you need right in the store.

If not, once you know all about the threads, go to a hardware store, a GOOD hardware store that carries metric bolts and nuts. They'll have exactly what you need. I believe there are lockwashers, as well as a flat washer, between the nut and the flange. May as well replace all 4 nuts, washers, and bolts. Not expensive, and well worth the money you'll spend.

Worst case, yeah, order it all from the dealer. They WILL have them.

BTW: as I recall, those bolts will just tap out. A small hammer, and a few firm taps, and they're out. I might be wrong on that, though.

Good luck!
Pat

The driveshaft nuts are taller than your corner store metric nuts and I assume stronger, the special short headed studs on the transfer case output are press fit and difficult to find.

Do you have a machine shop in town? If you bring one of the studs you pull, they may have a better selection of specialty hardware to match.
