Anyone else having issues with Napa blower motor resistor's burning out the #1 or lowest blower fan setting? I've gone through two now. Works for about 15 seconds..then you smell it burning. All other speeds work fine after including high blower. The original worked for 31 years. Thanks!

 

I replaced mine with a factory unit from Toyota once, and never had it fail again.

Sounds like maybe you have an issue with the blower motor drawing too much current maybe?

 

I would make sure your fan speed selector switch isn't going out on you if it hasn't ever been replaced before. Once they get worn out and melt a bit, the electrical components inside can get all crossed around. If it's the original one, you can bet it is pretty fried by now. LOL Maybe this is doing something to the resistor? Would the resistor fry out if it had two or more wires activated at the same time?

If you do get a new fan switch, make sure to get one with good reviews. I purchased one that hardly worked and was assembled very poorly.

 

the OEM part is about 10$ I just ordered one today from the dealer. I would skip the aftermarket part and just get the one that lasted over 20 years.

I have an account with Checkered Flag Toyota in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Toyota part # is 87138-89105

 

As Blueman mentioned, it might be worth dropping the motor and make sure nothing is binding it up. They're pretty easy to pull out. But using a oem resisitor most likely will solve your issues.

the Resistor cost you 34$ from the stealership? I usually get my parts either from Roseville Toyota here in California which is about 5 miles from me or from Camelback toyota in Arizona they both have heavily discounted online parts prices and free shipping on orders over a certain quota. I paid $10.87 with CA tax for the resistor at Roseville Toyota Parts. 34$ seems steep unless you were talking about price for the blower motor?

 

Nope, Just the resistor..And I have had a commercial account with them for over 20 years. Maybe I need to deal with Roseville.

 

I misspoke earlier. I didn't go with Mama Toyota on my replacement. I bought a part on Amazon for $17 and it's now $15:

So, I decided to dig into my records on this one to just to be sure.

I've owned the truck since it was new in '87.
1999, 134k miles: replaced the resistor with a factory part, #88635-89103 for $16
2013, 186k miles: replaced the resistor with an Amazon part, RU250, for $17

So the original one lasted 12 years, then the next Toyota one lasted 14 years. I'm guessing my current one will fail in 2026.
