new to forum and too toyota trucks. I just bought a 89 pickup 22re 5 speed for a farm truck/beater. I knew it had an issue when I bought it but as a diesel mechanic for a trade I decided to play with it. Anyways it’s got a surge to idle shortly after starting maybe 2 minutes. When trying to drive it have a buck/hesitation at lower engine rpm that will power out of it. Previous owner has tried plugs wires tps. Fuel pump ecm catalytic convertor and issue is still there. Any ideas??
Is the TPS properly adjusted? Vacuum leaks and cracked intake piping is another possibility, use some carb cleaner to see if the idle changes when spraying in suspect spots. A proper and OEM O2 sensor on these engines is critical as well, in fact they are recommended to be changed regardless of condition per the maintenance schedule I believe.
As far as I know tps is adjusted properly I will recheck that. I also will look for cracks in intake pipe. As far as idle speed I’m unsure what it’s set at truck doesn’t have a tach.
Throw a timing light on it to set idle speed and ensure that timing is properly adjusted as well. Idle issues can also be caused by a sticky idle air control valve.
IAC valve has been replaced also. Will get a timing light and check timing. Should be 3 degrees correct? I am leaning more towards a vacuum leak I believe. Have noticed idle will rise when clutch pedal is pushed in.
I believe its 5* with the appropriate ports jumped on the diagnostic port @ 750 RPM (800-850 RPM for 4WD people usually do though). FSM should be stickied at the top of the forum.
got my ground hooked up. Started engine idle longer than it used to before it turned rough. Can hear a random misfire and smells rich. Unplug tps and it smooths out. Any chance the new tps is bad or o2 sensor since it goes into open loop with tps disconnected?

Clear the learned fuel trim by disconnecting the battery?
And you still need to get the RPM nailed down, some timing lights have the tach function otherwise you're looking at about 20-30 to get a standalone guage and wiring bits to clip it in.
So here is the concept, after the warm up cycle the ECU will cut the fuel and ignition off if it sees the throttle is closed (IDL signal from TPS) when the rpms are over a certain value (somewhere bin the 1100-1250 range). This is the typical "surge" people encounter, it's not really a surge but that's terminology pet-peeve.
