Help diagnosing coolant leak? 92 Toyota pickup

92 toyota pickup with the "gutless" V6

coolant leaking from around the area of the lower radiator hose/bypass hose, but i'm almost certain it's not either of those hoses

video here:

i snake my phone up and around the oil pan, you can see the bypass hose.

any ideas help. i'm not great at mechanic-ing and whatnot but i have fixed everything i've ever needed to fix before. just need to know what to fix here.

rock on and thanks!

It's hard to tell but looks like a water pump leak. Is it coming out of the weep hole?

Agreed, looks like the water pump.
Since you have to remove the timing belt to change the water pump, I would suggest changing the timing belt while you're at it. In fact, most timing belt kits come with a new water pump.

LOL you said weep hole

honestly though i have no idea what the weep hole is or where the water pump is even located but i get the feeling that you and the other guy are right.

FML i am not skilled enough to replace a water pump and timing belt but i guess i will have to learn. thanks for the advice, i do appreciate it

The weep hole is a small hole just outside the main seal at the bottom of the pump. It's purpose is in it's name, to weep when the pump begins to go bad. It's a tattletale of sorts so you are alerted to a bad water pump before it fails completely and leaves you stranded.

Timing belt kits are fairly inexpensive, but it is an involved job. The radiator shroud, radiator, and fan all need to come out just to get started. It's not the hardest thing in the world though, and there's more YouTube videos than you'll need to watch. If you decide to take it on, just take your time, don't force anything, and read up. If you get stuck, there's plenty of help available here.

get in there and wipe and air dry all the bits, attach the SST (radiator cap and air pump) run ithe pressure up the the 13psi spec and put your eyeballs where you thing it's leaking.

If that doesn't find a leak add the UV dye for coolant and shove a UV light in there and repeat..

Yes and no, the weep hole is the outlet for the water pump shafts seal. It doesn't mean the pump is bad just the seal has failed.

this is what i believe has happened. cheap enough to replace the entire water pump though i suppose. my repair book tells me it will not be the toughest repair i have ever taken on but it will be quite involved.

i ˟˟˟˟ing love you guys.

i have made so many diagnoses correctly and repaired so many issues before becoming a member here just based on old threads i've found.

can i send you guys all 5 american dollars or is that not allowed (just kidding i am broke lol)

thank you for this timely reminder.

i will try to definitively find the source of the leak before trying to repair something which may not be the source of the leak

measure twice, cut once (make a bad cut and cut it again, cut it one more time, hit it with a sledgehammer, then give up and say "˟˟˟˟ it, nail it")

great, so immature lol😂 now next time you hear a Geico commercial and they say " save you more on your insurance " realize they said "moron "! Ha ha . Good times he he. Seriously though good luck on the fix. I didn't realize it's a little more involved on these. I'm a little used to the water pump being on the outside. But it seems like a good time to take care of of a timing belt while your at it.

Yes, I was just putting it in layman's terms. Usually the seal fails because the bearing has worn and the shaft begins to pick up some play. Once you see the weep, it's the beginning of the end for your pump.
