Tach/Dwell for 84-85's

I'm looking for a tach that works well for the 22re engine with the tubular type coil.

My shop manual shows a three wire tachometer for this engine and coil that connects to both posts of the battery and to the negative post of the coil. Are there any three wire tachs you can recommend?

Could two wire tachs like the sears penske #21014 work on this engine as well? If so, how should they be connected to the engine?

I dunno about the Sears tach. I have an inexpensive (ahem...read "cheapie") tach/dwell I got when I owned a 1980 Chevy Luv, since it had points, and I needed the tach AND dwell. I believe I got it at Pep Boys, but I may well be wrong on that. There are, or were, a lot of different chain stores in Yuma when I was there, many year ago.
Anywho, I still have the tach/dwell meter, and it works great for the Toyotas. Same with the "inexpensive" timing light I got about the same time. I got them both about 1987 or so, if that tells you anything.

Good luck!

I have a couple tach/dwell meters, one is a Sears Penske. I think i’ve used it on my 4runner with no problem.
