Hello all,
Just picked up this super clean example from the original owner. Love these old 4runners and very happy I found this one. 214,000 miles on the 3vze and original head gasket, PO overheated this about a year ago, but really not showing any ill effects. One issue, when the air compressor kicks on,it drags the idle down to 500. I’m actually pretty impressed the truck doesn’t stall. Suspect the vsv, can these be cleaned /reconditioned? Already tried another one from the junkyard, no dice. Other than that it runs really well, other than a slight stumble at idle. Any info would be helpful, looking forward to owning this truck and learning more about it on this board.

Wow that's clean! What a find! My 3VZE didn't have A/C, but I just had to comment on how nice that runner is! I just pulled my engine at 365K for a 3.4 swap, but the 3.0 never left me stranded. Even on it's 5 remaining cylinders I would have trusted it to get me anywhere in the states.

Thank you, picked it up super cheap because it was dumping oil all over the ground. Turned out to be nothing more than a broken oil filter. Good to know you got 364k, I think these engines get a bad rap, they seem pretty damn tough.

I have 278k on mine with the HG recall done at 140k. If it's the original HG in the truck toyota did recall them. You can call any dealership with your vin and ask for any recalls that have been done or need to be done free of charge. Might be worth it

Super clean truck and welcome!

Thanks for that, was done in 2000. The thing runs like a top. Just need to get the AC idle up sorted. Possibly the best 800 I’ve ever spent. I think this pic tells the tale (the other half of the garage is owned by the wife).

$800!!!
What a steal. The 3.0 got it's bad rap from the head gasket issue. Other than that they are nearly unkillable, with 145 horsepower they aren't strong enough to harm themselves.

Ha ha, Toyota 4wd trucks are supposed to be slow, this one reminds me of a tractor. It’s funny, I’ve had 80/100/200 series land cruisers, tacos and runners, the engines all sound the same when you fire em up.

Wow, $800 is definitely a steal! I drove a 3.0 for almost 2 years with 400k + KM on it, other than basic maintenance I only had to change one tie rod end. In my opinion it's nowhere near as bad as some people say it is.

Beautiful 4Runner! That is one nice and clean interior!

You got a great deal!

It is still worth $800 without the engine and transmission.

Hey, I am glad I am not the only one who likes the 3VZ-E. I think it is a great engine. My only "complaint" is the not-so-great fuel mileage, but it is 1980s technology.

That was my only real complaint as well. When I bought my 93 it got 16-18 mpg if I ran a whole tank commuting (I used to have about an hour freeway drive to work). The last tank I ran before pulling the engine was almost all mountain driving and on 5 cylinders, and I averaged about 6 mpg. I'm looking forward to the possible 20 mpg with the 5vz-fe.

just sheer luck, as I stated the PO ran it out of water a year ago and was told by someone the hg was bad. He put a new radiator in it and kept driving. Then his kid was driving it when the oil filter broke, guess he thought the engine was shot, I kinda did too but it was so clean I bought it anyway, it’s been garaged it’s whole life, you should see the frame, looks brand new. Anyway, my mechanic tested the hell out of it, it’s solid, despite the overheat event. Yes, I’m happy, I like these more than the third gens.

BTW, exhibit A of why never to use a cheap aftermarket oil filter. I always use oem Toyota.

Looks like there is a dash cover on it to hide the original cracked dash. I am looking at getting one for my ‘95 4runner. I just can’t figure out what color will match. Congrats on the find!!!

Actually no, the dash is perfect, check that pic again. However I do want to grab some kind of cover to keep it from cracking in the future, if you know of a good one please let me know.
