I don't plan on running 33" tires. My 32x10.5's work great, and I drive 6-750 miles per week. My question is I want my truck to be as capable as possible off the road, but still managable for everyday use eg. hauling small trailers boats, etc. Right now it is a bone stock 2.7. What's the best engine mod for the money? I was thinking just starting with a new air-filter and intake system to let it breath a little better.
The tranny seems like it needs some help. Is anyone familiar with some great shift kits, or should I save the money and spend it on something else?

I did a deckplate and air filter when I had a 2.7L, it was beneficial. I would go that route rather than a new intake system. You can fit a 4" deckplate in, and still go back to stock when you need to.

If you read through it, you can tell I was pretty excited about it at the time. In retrospect, it wasn't that big of an improvement. But I do think it was worthwhile. I see that the pics don't work anymore, but if you want them I can dig them up.

 

F/R Lockers

 

Well, I've since added a flowmaster muffler, and the deckplate mod. One without the other is hardly noticeable, however with the added airflow, the flowmaster can work to its full potential. My 2.7 has never run better!
113,000 and counting.

 

Soon to add:
Home Fab'd rock sliders, and a 1" RB body lift. Ordering the lift Monday, Welding up the rock sliders Tommorow hopefully.

Change your gears to something higher numerically. These would be more "Performance oriented" gears. Would also, at some point later on allow you to add bigger tires without any serioius loss in performance. The bigger tires will come when your 4x4 interest increases, and with the gears you already have you won't lose any performance. And then after the tires you can start the real engine mods IE exhaust, intake alteration or replacement, headers, etc.

 

Also, to add - if you do the gears, add a good rear locker in the process as was eluded too already. Won't affect your on-road driveability but sure will help you in some sticky offroad situations. Also, since you have bigger tires than I believe are stock for the 2.7, you will need higher numerical gears anyways to get back to stock ratio or "normal" ratio if that's the way to coin it. That's probably the main problem you have in terms of loss of power. I think it's something like for every inch of tire you move over the stock ratio, you lose 3.5% of your power (or something like that - could be wrong).
Aren't the stock tires on the 2.7 like 28's or something? or maybe 29's? 32-29 = 3 x 3.5 = 10.5% HP loss IE you are now around 133-134 HP instead of 150.

 

I "decoded" the A/TMBO4A on my doorjam and according to toyota, My 2.7 auto Tacoma has 4.55 gears, and came stock w/ 265 tires. I'm pysched about this because I should be-able to run 32x10.5 relatively easily. I graduate school Dec 17 and after that I have plans for a rear locker of some sort, the arb air lockers are too damn expensive, and I've heard and read bad things about detroit's in toyota axles. (I'm not sure if I've got a 7.5 or an 8" axle)
I just finished spending a few hours talking with my buddy about having him help w/ fabbing up some sliders and with his help the work should be done within the next few weeks. Yotatech, thank you for the inspiration, and to all you members on here, your pictures, articles, and attitude have helped open my eyes to what is possible!

 

I just bought the benzboy turbo manifold for my 2.7 and intake piping etc. just have to pick up my t3/t04e turbo,oil lines, HKS S-AFR, etc. Right now I have the deckplate mod and a magnaflow exhaust and it definitely has more power but im ready for turbo

 

Do the ISR Mod while your at it!

lol we do, except I have so many 99+ parts on it because its been in so many accidents. Something about these 2.7s attracts deer,wreckless girls in civics etc.

Oh yea and other mods ive done, irdium(sp) spark plugs(not really a mod but it was 50$ for 4 so i consider it a mod) and a Fuel Pressure Regulator, both of which i think don't do much but oh well. Another benefit of the 2.7 is that it is a big 4 so it will spool up a bigger turbo quicker. Of course im not sure how much boost the 2.7 can take.

 

i don't mean to hijack this thread but. do you have any pics of your setup trangk?

 

So far I've done the K&N FIPK, NWOR headers, and switched to Amsoil.

If you truly have 4.56 gears...consider yourself lucky.
Mine came stock with 3.58 gears (but I do have the 5-speed)...even running 31's is a stretch.

- Do get new headers.
- Do switch to Amsoil (no I'm not a dealer, but I get it at dealer's cost from a friend).
- Do the deckplate mod - save your money and skip the K&N. You will get the same effect using a little elbow grease and pocket change.

That's about all I can offer. If money were no object I would probably look into a supercharger for it...

Nah. At this point the only money I will be spending is to fab a new airbox that will fit the K&N filter, have a removable hood, and hook up to a snorkel.
