Howdy all. New, been digging around for info here for a couple weeks, researching my new-to-me pickup. Got it from the original owner basically. Been going thru it, removing wirenuts, and generally trying to un˟˟˟˟˟ everything.
details-
1986 pickup 4x4, 22re, mostly stock besides header. Head was replaced years ago, and timing chain im “assuming”.
the old man has the factory service manuals with years of notes, but he wont come off them yet.
so, this is the issue. It will start and idle fine. Rev up fine with no load, but as soon as you put it in gear and ease the clutch out, it starts to break up. Seems like the timing isnt advancing. My neighbor has a working timing light im going to borrow, as all of mine have ˟˟˟˟ out. I have a vid, ill work on posting it soon, to help diagnose
Forgot to mention. Checked codes as well, got a code 6. Swapped dizzy pickup since the old one looked rough, and the wires were hard as a rock. Changed plugs and wires as well. No difference

ok, so ill guess this is the ecu. Looks ok, nothing visibly burned up or out of the ordinary. Cleaned it up, reassembled, reinstalled.
Whats this green guy behind it? Passenger side in front of door
Checked timing today. Set it at about 8* when jumpered. Still cant put load on it, starts missing bad. Maybe the ignitor? I just dont wanna spend hundreds on a new one unless i know thats definitely it. Cant get vids to upload, must be too big. Might have to host elsewhere
Rain today in jax, prolly wont get to check anything. I did get a few service books ordered. Hopefully they show up this week. The old man will not sell his book, but he let me borrow it. Its just an old chiltons, i thought it was a better factory manual 🤦🏻♂️ Anyway, i found the same book on amazon for $12
O.P.,
Checked fuel pressure? Google Search IN FORUM "fuel pressure piggybacked" Checked how the spark plugs look?
My DLX has wiper delay but des not have that green module. I think green box is Light reminder relay.

havent checked fuel pressure yet. Plugs looked black and sooty, and under load exhaust smelled like raw fuel and saw a bit of black smoke. Using an inline spark tester, all cylinders are firing, even when its missing. So im assuming its just not firing at the right time. Ill look up the fuel pressure thread after work. Thanks
Any info from the original owner on when the clutch was last replaced? I looked at the video and I don't think that's an engine run issue. Given the shake on the shifter I'm (admittedly) guessing clutch issues.

Clutch is shot, throwout bearing sounds like marbles in the trans. But even fully engaged and driving down the road, theres a misfire
Hey my dude. You gotta a sweet rig! There's probably going to be a period of time where you have to exorcise those demons and lift the curse of owners past lol. Do a search and find the FSM's which are way better than the Chilton or Haynes. I have the 85' if you need. Welcome to the forum!

Nice Salomons and nicer truck
Tried fuel injector cleaner? If yours feels same as mine did a couple of times, it could just be clogged injectors / fuel system.
In 2016, after a trip to backcountry Utah, mine hesitated when coming from full stop as I'm feathering the throttle and slowly releasing the clutch. Also did it when in too high a gear on the road. I remembered feeling same on my Nissan Sentra back in 1987 that STP fuel injector cleaner in a full tank of gas fixed. Suspecting bad gas, used STP fuel injector and sure enough fixed it after a full-tank of gas.
Last February, it did it again. This time I noticed it only happened when engine was hot and I started researching EGR and other complicated stuff, but stuck to my keep it simple approach. Once more STP fuel injector cleaner fixed it! I could have used any other injector cleaner, or a couple tankfuls pure gas may have fixed it, too, but I don't want to bother experimenting.
