I have a 90 model pickup with a 22re motor. It has 320k original miles. We are rebuilding the engine but the injectors need to be rebuilt. It sat up for years. A new set is very expensive. a rebuilt set on Ebay is pretty cheap, about half the cost of the new OEM injectors. However, do any of you have any suggestions on having the originals re built/ serviced?

 

My '89 22RE had an injector go bad at 180,000. Asked the tech about rebuilt. He said we''ve had good luck with rebuilt.. Installed four of 'em. Still Fine at 191,500. Somebody will chime in w/ preferred rebuilders.

 

Injectors can't be "rebuilt" in any meaningful sense. (Why do you think yours "need" to be rebuilt?) I'm sure what people call "rebuilt" are just injectors that have been back-flushed, with new o-rings/spacers.

However, you can send yours out to be cleaned and tested. If they pass a realistic test (and you replace the rings/spacers), you're good to go.

I Google'ed up "fuel injector rebuild service" and found plenty of good rebuild services out there, and most are $20 per injector or less, plus shipping. Have a look.

 

Incidentally, after mine were replaced with the "rebuilt" injectors, the preignition problem that plagued that pickup was just about completely gone. I remember the first summer I drove it, I borrowed it from my brother to go after some parts I had bought from a guy in another city. Filled it with 87, and it pinged bad in the 100+ heat. After I bought it, I used 93 during the hot months. Yes, the ignition timing had been set correctly.

 

I sent my 4 injectors to Witchhunter for a "rebuild" and 1 failed after about 100 miles. Ended up buying an new OEM one, other 3 are fine so far...

 

I’m curious, other than sitting along time, was there some indication of a issue? Was the coloration on the spark plugs indicative of a too lean condition(or rich)?
I'm not sure how someone would "rebuild" an injector. You can buy new filter screens for them, but unless they're damaged I'd think you could just clean them.
Personally, I’d replace the o-rings and cushions, put a strong cleaner in the tank(like 44k)m fill up with Chevron 91 octane and go from there.

 

pretty much my experience with witchhunter as well. however, most people are highly enamored with witchhunter. find an outfit that will warranty their work. HINT: witchhunter does not offer a warranty with their service.
