do I just pry off the wireing connection to the MAF sensor to remove it for cleaning?

You do not have a MAF sensor.
There is nothing in there to clean.
Do not remove the screws from the side of your VAFM!
Toyota wire harnesses of this erra us a metal spring clip to retain plugs into there sockets, you release the by dislodging the clip from the retention slots at the ends of the spring clip (be careful they like to go flying off never to be found again).

I have the problem of the engine starting but then dies. It only does this intermittently, it has started fine over the last few weeks. It started doing this suddenly - out of the blue. It did respond to cleaning the battery clamps, I have since replaced them as well. It did die again after that though.

"MAF" = Mass Air Flow (meter)
"AFM" = Air Flow Meter (any kind)
"VAF" = Volume Air Flow meter (found in Toyotas). Different technology from a Mass Air Flow meter.
The fuel pump is controlled by the COR. The COR is initially closed with the key to STArt. After the engine starts sucking air, a switch in the VAF closes to keep the COR closed. (A tiny bit of searching on this site would have turned this up; it seems someone explains this about 1/week.)
Why do you care? What are your symptoms? (And tell us what Make/Model/Engine/Trim you have.)
Last but not least, welcome to YotaTech.

After an hour? After a few seconds?
You can test the whole VAF-COR circuit by jumpering FP to B+ on the diagnostic connector. If you can start the truck then, you have a problem in the VAF-COR circuit. (which will not be solved by any sort of "cleaning" of the VAF).
