1990 4Runner with SAS swap
I just picked up my first off road rig, a 1990 4Runner, 22RE with 5 speed manual and SAS swap. According to VIN tag, it had a G58 trans in it stock....which according to my research was the trans with the ADD automatic locking hubs. From the look of it, I probably have a 1985 axle with manual locking hubs. Would this have required a trans swap? Is there an easy way of identifying the trans another way besides the VIN tag?
My clutch goes to the floor with hardly any friction point....not slipping or anything, but no adjustment. I'm planning to put in a new clutch and flywheel in and want to make sure I'm getting right parts and no surprises. Also hope to change transfer case gears to 4.7's.....how to tell if 21 spline or 23 spline?
I've searched around online and can't find a lot of definitive info.
Anyone have some info or advice? Thank you!

21 spline is generally 4 cylinder stuff and 23 spline is v6/turbo stuff.
Is the t case behind the g58 a gear or a chain drive? If its chain, youll have to convert to a gear style case before putting in 4.7 gears. Which I believe is done by swaping to a W56 trans/case. I found this on marlins board from big mike :

An adapter could be made, but I believe that it is more work than what it is worth. For starters, the G58 was only offered from 1989-95 in trucks that had Autolocking front hubs for 4WD shift-on-the-fly ability, which limits the amount of customers we see who need parts for a G58. But more detrimental to this problem, is that the transfer case shift rail height is lower for the G58-chain drive t/case setup than with the RF1A gear drive t/case setup, so even if we did make an adapter to put a gear drive t/case behind a G58 transmission, we would either need to make customer shift rails to account for this height offset, or we would need to make a special shifter that had a longer throw (which no one would want).
So in general, we strongly recommend you to consider upgrading (a W56 is stronger than a G58) to any W56-type transmission from 1985-99, understanding that there are two basic models available, one from 1985-88, and the other from 1989-95, short and long forward shift t/case rails respectively.
