How bad is this??

On the way to work Friday I suddenly felt some hard shaking in the rear along with hearing a loud noise as if I had dropped an axle. The car came to a stop and wouldn’t go. I couldn’t even push it.

Got to looking and discovered a piece connecting the drive shaft to the rear diff had come off (see video).

Can anyone tell by the looks of it how bad this really is? I’ve had it towed to a mechanic but they’ve not looked at it yet.

Did i I make a mistake letting the car idle while it was like this?

Could I have damaged the gears in the rear differential?

Idling it didn't make it worse. It's already bad as it can get.

Best case, pinion nut came off. :::: 3rd member overhaul: likely need new ring and pinion Worst case:::::: pinion broken in half::::::: 3rd member overhaul + new ring and pinion needed for sure

thanks for your reply millball. I’m not real familiar with the drivetrain. Are these generally expensive repairs?

Almost certainly cheaper to source a good used 3rd member. I don't think any shop would overhaul and r&r a third member for less than $700. maybe $1000, or more.

You might get a used 3rd for a couple hundred and do it yourself.

Hard to imagine that this failed without some warning.

gotcha. is there a chance the 3rd member is still good? Or is this pretty much a given?

No way to know for sure without disassembly and knowledgeable examination. Some internal parts may, or may not be salvageable.

There was no warning that I ever noticed. It’s been driving so good as of late, and just bam.
