Hello all Yotameisters! I'm new to the website and new to the wide world of old Toyotas! I recently bought an 81 4x4 pickup and fell in love with the old beast. I took the carb off to clean and rebuild it and whatta ya know.... the dam pictures I took got erased, the previous owner spray painted over the sticker under the hood (no idea why) and my Chilton book only shows diagrams for 84 and later models oven though the book is for 70-88 models. I also understand that there are multiple configurations even for the same year (4x2, 4x4, m/t, a/t, Canada, California, federal). I have a 1981 4x4 m/t federal. most of the vac lines line up and there's only a few of them I'm stuck on but I'm having no luck finding the proper diagram. If anyone can help me in any way I would appreciate it. Thanks yota people of earth!

I wish I had a Factory Repair Manual for this model year, but I don't. But I do have a Haynes manual.

Here is what my Haynes manual has for 1981 Federal Emissions with manual transmission. The description can read several ways, but this is the only one in the book that matches your description.

It looks like this diagram works for all 1981 Federal trucks with manual transmissions and 1981 Canada 2WD trucks with manual transmissions.



Hopefully this diagram matches what you see on your truck.

Nope, this is it.

That is why I think that this diagram applies to all Federal Emissions vehicles with manual transmissions, and to 2WD Canada trucks with manual transmissions.

The description reads strange without any punctuation. I *think* it should read: Emissions Control system layout - [Federal] and [Canada 2WD] with manual transmissions. My biggest clue is that the charcoal canister is labeled with (for 4x4). That should only show up if the diagram applied to some 4WD models.

I could be wrong on this, but this is all I have.

 

well thanks man but there's a few things different on mine. I have two of those multi hose harness deals, a couple more vsv's, the hoses coming from the choke opener, choke breaker and the tvsv for the aap are going other places. I'm taking a bazillion dam photos and uploading and printing them next time. this is pickling.
do you think a Toyota dealer would have the info I'm searching for?

 

Well that is good to know. The Haynes manual may have combined some models and left out your particular case.

The dealer might have what you are looking for, but many have started phasing out the older models from their databases. I still think it is worth a shot!

What would be really nice is a diagram from the Factory Repair Manual. If you can find one, it should have exactly what you need. Maybe someone else on here has one and could take a picture for you.

 

 

after many nights of confusion and frustration, I finally said ˟˟˟˟ it and got a weber 32/36. simplicity is key right? anyways, I've been going through the entire fuel system and fuel tank cleaning repainting and replacing rubber. I'll have to post up some pics when I finally get this all put back together and am ready to fire it up! I'm also posting my whole project under "slappy's 81 rebuild"

 

Not sure what state you live in but if you ethanol in your fuel make sure your replacement lines can handle it. Ethanol loves to eat fuel lines and carburetor diaframs. Supposedly National Carburetor has the new parts.
