NO 4th gear. Trans swap?
I have recently been experiencing some issues with my 87 4runner 22re W56. It shifts great through every gear but 4th, a couple weeks ago it started grinding and then it would pop out then I would have to hold the shifter while I released the clutch until it was engaged, now it's totally non existent running or not. I have been limping it along revving up 3rd and going to 5th, 1-2-3-5. Is this an issue that is easily fixed? I'm a fairly competent shade tree mechanic but I have never opened up a trans.
Second question is what year trans can I swap into the 4runner? I was doing some reading on marlins website and there are 5 different types of W56 trans they all seem to be the same length and gearing but are the mounts different? Jus t wanna know what to look for when Im perusing the pick-n-pull

Any of the various w56 trannys should be a straight swap. The differences are in relatively small internal details
It's a waste of time and effort to dismantle a manual tranny to attempt repair without changing out all its bearings and syncros minimum.
A comprehensive rebuild kit that includes all bearings, syncros and gaskets can be got for $150 or less. Look at Ebay.
When there are problems with a tranny like you have; you have to keep in mind that you may have to replace some worn or broken hard parts
over and above what wear parts are included in a rebuild kit.
You'll need use of various gear/bearing pullers, snap ring pliers, a hydraulic press, different soft brass/aluminum drifts, punches, time, space, patience and a factory service manual.
I'd try and find a used tranny with some small promise of serviceability, and swap it in. Then you can decide whether to take your dead one apart.
