Where to set the timing without using the limp mode 93 pickup 3.0l

I cant seem to get my truck to activate the limp mode to set the timing what degree should it be at without using limp mode?

I assume that by' activating', you mean the jumpering of the TE1 to E1 terminals in the diagnostic plug???

The idle RPM must be very near to spec (not too high) and the TPS must be sending its 'throttle closed' signal to the ECU before the jumper will have its correct effect and then will show true base timing.
