Limp Mode

I wouldn't really call it that. But when I start my 92 4-runner V-6 it will run a few feet and then the engine light will come on. The second it does it goes from running like a raped ape, to a slug. I was albe to turn the truck off a few days ago and it would turn off once warm. But now I restart it and it clicks right back on.

My FPU has been disconnected since I put the new engine in about 500 miles ago.

Also as a side note I added some medium grade fuel on accident and the thing had a noticeable differene in power. Then I filled back up with regular and the light started comming on. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Ideas?

HIgher octane shouldnt make any difference at all, just burns a little slower. Short the diagnostic connector pins to blink out what codes you have stored. X2 on the fuel filter. Recent cap, wires? Original o2 sensor?

Yes,

Original cap, wires, plugs, who knows when the o2 sensor was changed.

I would say it was the fuel filter as well. especially since the tank had sat forever and I do have a new fuel filter...but the days prior when I turned off the car and started it back up the car ran like a champ with the engine light off. It is only the very second that engine light kicks on that the car loses all guts.

what code is the ECU bringing up? that should be your first task, then go from there... but it wouldnt hurt IMHO to replace the cap, plugs, wires, fuel filter, and even give it an oil change...

Yeah I guess I will do those things. There is only 500 miles on the oil. I need to run it down to Autozone I guess and see what code is comming up.

I tested it myself with a jumper and here is what I got.

41 - Throttle Position Sensor

52 - Knock Sensor

I've read the knock Sensor is a real PITA...but given the characteristics of my problems mentioned above what do you suggest?

I'm going to clean the TPS and hope that fixes both problems? I do have an aftermarket Air intake on this. A Downey system that I got when I got the truck. It worked fine the first 500 miles since the engine swap though.
