86 pickup radiator recommendations

Hey guys. Bought this truck a couple weeks ago and slowly fixing everything the PO screwed up. For some reason it has a GM radiator (?) that doesn’t even fit properly. Truck has 33s on it now and I don’t believe it’s been regeared. I live in the mountains of NC, so it’s cooler up here, but the truck will be working harder because of the hills. Will I be fine with an OEM replacement or should I get something beefier? Was debating between 2 or 3 core spectra premium from rockauto, or a mishimoto/other aftermarket one.

Nothings wrong with the OEM radiators but I've heard really good things about mishimoto. You should look into the gearing on your truck it makes a nice difference especially if you're running 33s, it might have already.

I've seen people's posts about using:
1) 3-core CSF, and
2) Radiator for the V6 3.0 engine,

But have not looked at details. Please share your findings.

great, thanks. I think I’ll just pick up an OEM one for now and see how it does. Will definitely look into regearing once I solve all of the other issues with this truck. I had 33s on my old TJ wrangler and when I regeared it was Night and day difference.

Anyone know why it would have GM radiator on it? Seems to be smaller than OEM. I’m assuming it was cheap/free and the PO just didn’t care.

There are "regular" and "Towing" versions of the OEM. pls look into the differences.

Yep, P.O. wanted it to run, if barely, so he can sell it.

The CSF's are a nice drop in replacement. Copper/Brass construction. Purchased one of the 3 cores about 2 yrs ago for my old rig. At the time Amazon had about the best prices on them when they had them in stock.

Appreciate the input, Andy A.
BTW, does CSF only sell the 3-core for the 22R-E or does it have different models?

If I remember correctly they offered both a 2 core and 3 core.

Yes, CSF offers both a 2-row standard replacement for most trucks and a 3-row for "heavy duty" applications. Automatic transmission coolers are included in the design, and not used for manual transmission models.

These radiators are not quite as good as the original OEM Toyota radiators, but are the best you can get these days for a direct replacement as most OEM radiators are no longer available or cost $$$$$.

I am assuming that the PO didn't put the fan shroud back either, you might want to look around for one since they do make a difference. Especially at low speed/stoplights etc.

I got a replacement fan shroud from Rockauto, looks like a quality peice. Of course I went to install it, and that's when I realized my radiator wasn't an OEM unit

I don't know.... maybe it is just me.... but,

I would rather buy a quality made part up front, even if it is more expensive, than keep replacing the same cheaply made part over and over or have it fail at the worst of times....

A few people have had good luck with them though....

Hey guys! Ended up going with a spectra premium 2 core from rock auto. Looks super nice and fits perfectly! Will report back how it performs.
