Hello,

I just replaced my fuel pump and fuel filter to address a sputtering issue I thought was possibly a fuel delivery problem... It's not really resolved so I want to replace my spark plugs (I have never done so).

I was looking at Rock Auto and saw a few different models of NGK plugs. Can someone recommend a plug that is closest to OEM or a suitable replacement? Copper/Iridium??? Just want to get the right plug.

The factory recommended NGK spark plugs from my 1987 Owners Manual is:

I really need my truck right now. What tools do I need to pull these plugs? Do I need a special socket? Is replacing these too difficult on the 22R?

 

You will need a spark plug socket if you don't have one. I've found NGK plugs are pretty precisely gapped at the factory, but I always check them with a plug gapper anyway. The plugs are quite easy to change, but be careful not to cross-thread the new ones when installing. Just go slow & easy.

If I were you, I would also replace the plugs wires (NGK makes a nice set) and the distributor rotor & cap. All can be done in less than 30 minutes, and no other special tools are needed.

 

Perfect. I am now going to attack the ignition piece of the puzzle... since I replaced the fuel pump and the fuel pump appears to be fine.

Where are you shopping?

I prefer Toyota OEM distributor caps and rotors myself. The Toyota distributor caps and rotors are made by Denso, so if Denso is available, I would go with those parts.

 

I was looking at Rock Auto for the NGK Plugs and Wires but I don't see the Denso Cap and Rotor... guess I will have to look elsewhere for those.

Also, when I installed the new fuel pump (Delphi), I may need to replace one of the hoses to make it longer. Does anyone know what the diameter of the rubber hose is that comes off the metal fuel lines? Is it 1/4" rubber? Where can I find a section of this stuff?

 

I would highly suggest getting the OEM cap and rotor, I've run a few different aftermarkets and they were never without problems. They were relatively cheap from dealer (unlike a lot of other parts lol)

 

Thanks. I am at Toyotapartsdeal.com and have what I believe to be the OEM Distributor Cap and Rotor in my cart... The product description doesn't specifically say Denso but I assume it's all the OEM parts. I may call their support too.

Truck is definitely getting worse.

I need to get a 13/16" socket for the plugs too.
