Unhappy Oil in coolant fresh engine!!!!!

Hey guys!!! I put a refurb 22RE in my '95 pickup 4x4, ran it through the engine shops recommended break in procedure, put 500 miles on the engine, and now have oil in my coolant BUT NO coolant in my oil. I got in touch with the mechanic from the shop I bought the engine from and explained the situation to him (thinking possible blown head gasket) and he said its extremely rare for a fresh head gasket on fresh milled surface with fresh head bolts to go bad. He also said that from his experience it sounds more like a timing cover flaw. I'm just trying to find out how to test a timing cover and I am seeking advice on anything else it could be. I have a run for memorial day weekend I am trying to make. Please help!!!

Thank you everyone in advance!!!!

Of course that's what he said, otherwise it would be his problem. What you need to do is do a compression test and see if you can tell if the HG is blown. Make sure you remove all the spark plugs when you do the test. If you don't know how just google it, How to check for a blown HG
Good luck

did you replace the engine due to the old one failing? any chance the oil was trapped in your radiator and heater core since then?
How much oil?

Yup, don't panic until you verify that you are loosing coolant or oil. If you clean out the cooling system and everything is staying full you don't have a problem.

I'd also verify the head was torqued to the new specifications.
