Im looking at swapping my 22r in my 79 pickup for 1uz. I have already swapped the 20r that was originally in it for a 22r. Im just curious about what transmission I should get or if they already match up. The transmission is the stock tranny that came with the truck. 5 speed manual.
I'm surprised that your 79 came with a five-speed. I think they were originally equipped with an L 43 4-speed. My 1982 even came with a 4-speed.
The only transmissions that are suitable for the swap are the W series and the R series. If you don't already have one, I would focus on getting an R150F transmission. It is the strongest manual transmission available for your application and pretty reasonably priced in the used market. Search hard enough and you may be able to pick one up for around a hundred dollars. They don't have the right transfer case though, so you will need an adapter. That will set you back around $300, but I think that's a better idea than trying to run a W series transmission, which wouldn't need a transfer case adapter, but which in my opinion is not strong enough for your application.
I don't know what your budget is, but if you're like me you will be looking to save money wherever you can, but still get the job done. Thankfully, the Lexus engine is pretty inexpensive to acquire, but they're still going to be costs involved in adapting the transmission, building the right cooling system, modifying your drivelines, figuring out the fuel delivery, running an exhaust system, and getting the wiring sorted. It seems like the end goal is well worth the effort though.
Just imagine how good you feel when your engine bay looks like this
