87 4x4 Pickup throwing codes 6 12 and need help deciphering
#1
So in taking my 87 22RE 4x4 for a spin today I got it an oil change and after I get in to drive home I get a Check Engine Light.
I get the codes and it throws out 6 and 12.
Now in cross referencing this page RIGHT HERE at 4crawler it says that my 87 is an early 22RE. So I see it as a 6:
"No engine revolution sensor (Ne) signal to ECU
- Ne being over 1000 RPM in spite of no Ne signal to ECU
- Defective Igniter circuit
- Defective Igniter
- Defective distributor
- Defective ECU"
and a 12:
"Knock control Sensor (KS) signal has not reached judgement level in succession
- Defective KS circuit
- Defective KS
- Defective ECU"
However, I am confused by the directions. Can an early model have more than one code at a time? I am assuming so at this point but the code 6 12 for the later 22RE's is still the same issues as the 6 for the early models. The only difference is that the early model 12 is a Knock Sensor issue.
Am I to assume that I am dealing with a distributor issue as well as a knock sensor issue (possibly)?
....and to cut to the chase what would be the best order to deal with these things in the hive mind's experience?
I get the codes and it throws out 6 and 12.

Well your engine will show codes for as many problems as you have no doubt there is a limit to how many can flash at one time.
If things were working fine till the oil change I can only guess who ever changed the oil knocked something loose or broke something.
Then it might just be one of those random events
Why did you not bring it to the attention of the shop that changed the oil ??
Yes you have a loss of tach (rpm )signal to the ecu it can be in any of those parts listed or the wiring between them.
The same with the knock sensor circuit
Look for loose connections or physical damage first before buying new parts!!
The plastic connectors do tend to get brittle with age !!

Now that you mention it I am not sure why I did not bring that to the attention of the shop. I guess I could give them a call......and more than likely they are going to shrug their shoulders and say it wasn't them.
One of the codes is 12 which is related to the knock sensor which is right near the oil filter....from what I understand.......so that makes sense that as they were installing it they may have gotten a bit agressive around the area. However throwing the 6 code for the distributor and such is strange to me........filling up the oil is pretty straight forward........that is unless if the KS code goes off it is not working properly there by making the distro code to go off because it cannot hear the KS......???
I usually do my own oil changes...I should not have taken the lazy route.

I poking around I found that the Knock Sensor wire had been yanked off the sensor. So I took it off soldered new copper strand wire to it, heat shrink......and it is back. Resetting the codes and I hope all is good now.
Careless jerks......learned my lesson......doing my own oil changes from now on.
