*New Truck* 1982 Toyota Pickup 4wd, stored 20 years.

Hi all,

Long time member here. it's been 10 years since I sold my last 82 and I've always had regrets about it.

well, I found another 82 long bed 4wd. This one is an Sr5.
so this truck was stored for 20 years. According to the PO it was a 1 owner truck and when it kept popping out of 2nd gear the put it in the barn and it sat. From what I was told, the original owner passed and it continued to sit.
the guy I bought it from had in for about 18mo and he told me the tank was filled with varnish, nearly full. As well as the carb. He had the tank and carb "acid dipped" and he rebuilt the carb.
I guess bees lived all over in the truck but no mice! So that's good.
I would have loved to have seen it then because I already found some beehive pieces all dried up and an actual dead bee!
some other things that have been done are a new clutch and when trans was down, the orig popping out of 2nd was fixed. I Can't recall exactly what caused that thought.

the truck also has a new clutch master cyl and slave.

the rear diff was rebuilt with a new 4.10 gear set and a Eaton Detroit trutrac unit.
The truck also came with the original window sticker, which is really cool as I like old stuff like that.
it came with the owners manuals, and a few shop manuals.
I took 3 videos.

I just got this truck and as it is I have not cleaned anything yet.

2nd video is of some parts for rebuilding the front diff. I'm not sure if it's truly all I need or if anyone can shed some light on it by seeing them in the video.

3rd video is of the orig. Window sticker and books.
let me know please if the books I received will suffice or if the actual FSM is best.
I also have the pdf of the book "how to keep your Toyota alive"

okay, now for some questions! I've always had the most help from this forum over the 13 years I've been on it. Now that the buttering is done lol....

1. I will post pics of the frame and underneath the truck but I did look in all the places known to be issues on the 1st gen and the worst spot in where the floorboards meet the front fender. Right around the front cab mounts.

would taking the cab off to fab up new floors be the best course of action?

2. There is a oil leak at the front of the engine. I've done a lot of reading on this forum and am thinking it has to be timing cover, oil pump gasket or dist o ring? Does that sound right? Or some bolt I read might be missing?? Going into timing cover?
I was hoping just oil pan gasket but it's wet up higher, BUT is totally dry around valve cover and half moon gaskets.

I also read on here oil coukd be blowing up higher from the fan? So should I dry it all off and try from There?
The drip pattern is odd, I think because it drips down onto the steering bars and runs along them before dropping.
it actually creates like 10 little drops on the ground after my 45 mile drive home with it. Very odd?? What do you guys think??

3. The guy I bought it from said it was blowing only lukewarm air from the vents and he was only seeing 160deg at thermostat, so he back flushed HC 2 times and replaced the thermostat 2 times trying to figure it out. With cardboard in from of rad it gets luke warm from vents but blows cold from front dash vents??? Bottom vents blow luke warm. Gauge works it goes almost to the writing on the temp gauge.
could it need a new HC? The thermostat is a 180 he said.
what about crap from critters in dash from sitting 20yrs?

4. Last issue.

all the gauges work except the ODO does this weird thing where the 10ths move almost a mike and as the mile is about to roll over it sticks and starts over!!! It's like the groundhog day of odometers lol.

any ideas?

any help with any of this would be awesome!!

I am throwing the idea around of a semi frame off resto.

what do you guys think of the truck? Is it a good canvass for said project?

thank you!

Hard to picture the canvas with out pics of the canvas

sounds like the coolant system has flaked/corroded to the point of little flow

what would be the best way to check for that? Radiator does look to be orig. So I'm sure the HC and associated items are too.

I just took a bunch of underbody pics, what site is now good to host From? I used to use photobucket but I don't think they allow pics to go onto sites anymore?

thanks

That is a beautiful truck! What plans do you have for it? DD, crawler? Glad another classic was saved.

That's a great looking truck. Looks like the PO's have done some work on it and it looks like there is some rust that will need your attention but an awesome starting point!! Interior is pretty much perfect! Very interested to hear what you have planned for it.

Where did you find that pdf? Would love to have a copy of that. That trans manual would be handy too. I’m having problems with 1st gear in my 82.

Thanks guys. Yeah, it needs some TLC but that's what I wanted when I picked it up. I wanted a truck that was all there and not a bucket of bolts but something that still needs some work.
I may take the cab and box off and do what I can to prolong the frame. I also don't plan on driving it much if at all in winter.
I will also do what needs to be done to fix the oil leak, heat issue and sticking odo. Any ideas on what they could be would be awesome.

thanks

A member here has it in his Sig, I just downloaded it today. Just search for 1983 Toyota Pickup fsm on Google. I searched 1982 of course but found the 83 at least.

edit. Here you go.

Thank you! Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have anything on the manual trans. Seems to be missing some chapters. I can’t seem to find any info on the manual trans in these trucks. I believe what I have is the L52. I would love to find an IPL or something similar on this trans, but I’ve been stymied so far. It wants to grind and pop out of first gear. The rest of the gears work fine.
BTW, congrats on the find! Wish mine were that solid. Got floor and frame repair to do on mine. That’s the bad thing about these Boxed frames. Oh well, I got welders and I’m not afraid to use them......

I didn't really look thru the fsm that's weird it's missing. Maybe read thread a bit see if it's revised. I will look at mine too. Thanks!
yeah welding is one thing I have not got into but want to. I've been eyeing up the new Vulcan ones at harbor freight that have great reviews

haha yeah. Thanks. So you live in big bear? I love big bear. I used to ski there when I lived in So Cal. Also went boating on the lake and spend July 4th there once. Traffic sucked getting there and back though
