Hi all, new to the forum.

I’ve picked up a somewhat cobbled-together R151 paired to an RF1A. All is well except the transfer was converted to top-shift when the input shaft was swapped. The current setup is crude, at best, and requires a 2” bodylift to fit. Would it be possible to swap in extended factory shift joints without tearing the case apart? It’s out of the car at the moment so I’d like to get it sorted!

To completely answer your question I can't say. But for my crawler box was was forwardshift when I got it. I trimmed shaft to be a topshift without disassembling box. Might take another set of hands.

Seems like cheating to me. But I guess that's the kind of world we live in now.

 

I once had a forward shifting transfer case shipped to me. When it arrived one of the shifter rails was broken. I just called over to Marlin Crawler and they were nice enough to sell me one. Of course, that was back in the day when you could get Marlin himself on the telephone. If anybody had some of those laying around today, it would be those guys.

You could also try to find someone with a forward-shift case and trade.

You've got my curiosity going now. You said something about an intercooler. I can't immediately think of any ’86 - ’95 Toyota pickups/4runners that came with an intercooler. Care to expand on that?

I'm interested because finding a spot for an intercooler has always been a problem for these vehicles and because I have been thinking about a VW diesel swap for my first generation 4runner. I have recently learned that the 2.o BHW engine in the 2004 - 2005 Passat will put out 173 hp and 305 tq with the only modification being a tune for the ECU.
