It does look like a factory radio. Under the red wire in the picture does it say Toyota?

 

See lower right.

 

It's a Toyota factory stereo cassette deck, but I don't believe it's a 1986 version. Those "soft" push buttons came with digital tuners, 1990's I would guess.

 

I think the stock stereo in 86 was closer to something like this with optional EQ or blank cubby space.

Hi guys, the one in the photo of my first post's the factory radio of my 4Runner SR5 1988 first gen. I'd like to know the factory radio in the Toyota Truck 1986. I didn't explain myself correctly, sorry for that.

That looks more like the early 80's Supra, Cressida, and the Celica GTS stock radio. ^ ^ ^ ^

It's older than the 2000 but newer than 1986. My '88 4Runner had a double din cassette player like the ones in the brochure. Probably the cheapest 'cause that's how I am. It had square buttons. I can't find one on eBay.

 

I am no expert, but I will share what I have found when researching factory radios for my truck. I do not know the specifics of what radio went into which model and which years, but I want to catalog that someday.

So here it goes....

It is getting increasingly more difficult to find good examples factory installed radios. The factory radios are usually the first thing to go as a "mod" for something that stays "steal me" with all of the colorful lights and displays. I have found that the radios Toyota used were actually pretty good, however their speakers were cheap (like most any car) and made the factory decks not sound as good as they were made.

Toyota had several radios and cassette player combinations based on how fancy you wanted your radio. Some were the DIN size with pocket below the radio, others had a DIN radio above a DIN cassette deck like what you have, and other models had 2 DIN radios and cassette player combination decks and came later to fancy 4Runners and Trucks. Toyota used two Japanese car audio suppliers in the 1980s and 1990s: Fujitsu Ten and Matsu˟˟˟˟a (Matsu˟˟˟˟a is the partent company of Panasonic and Technics. The Yotatech language censor may kill the M-a-t-s-u-s-h-i-t-a name, it has in the past!)

The best way to know what was available in 1986 is to look at the "Car Audio" section of the 1986 Factory Owners Manual. The Owners Manual will give a brief overview of each radio that was factory installed. There could have been other "dealer installed" radios that will not be in the Owners Manual.

Your best bet to find out what is the correct radio/cassette player options is to look at a 1986 Owners Manual.

I have found that Toyota changed the style of the radio deck wiring connectors between the 1986 and 1987 model years. You can see if the radio was meant for pre-1987 vehicles or 1987 and later vehicles by looking at the male connector side built into the radio.





I do have a radio from a 1986 Toyota Cressida (2 DIN) and another from a 1990 Corolla Wagon (DIN).
You can see the difference in style. The mid 1980s (bottom radio) is more square and the 1990s (top radio) is more rounded.

Here you can see the difference in connectors between the two radios. The first picture is the connector on the 1986 Cressida radio. It has 45 degree corners at the top of the connector and 4 plastic straight pieces that protrude from the top and bottom.




Here is the later style connector on the 1990 Corolla radio with rectangular 90 degree corners and only one plastic protrusion from the bottom

This component radio and cassette deck was definitely an option on the optioned Trucks and 4Runners in 1986, as others have pointed out above.

The 1986 truck I'm looking at has a different radio, a simple one, AM/FM and digital display, no cassette, square buttons, it says Toyota in a corner. I'm going to be able to take a closer look and photo of it this weekend, I'll tell what I find. But as you said, I need to see the 1986 truck owner manual to be sure.

And I can vouch for a still different Toyota factory Am/FM cassette that was in my Dad's original owner 1986 extra cab with separate bass and treble knobs.

 

You're welcome. I am still not an expert on old Toyota radios by any means. What I know came from trying to research what radio is supposed to go onto my 1987 2WD. I can guarantee there are a few radios I have never seen from the 1986 model year (or other model years). So, please post a picture of what you find!

There seems to be many different models of radios for the Trucks and 4Runners. I know there are several I have never seen! I have also seen some Toyota radios that looked almost identical except for an extra "bass/treble" knob or the knobs were changed to push buttons.

 

I was too late, sadly for me, the PO sold the truck before I could see it.
